    Columbus sets sail southwest to find a very large island. He thinks that he has reach the island of Japan but he really found the island of Cuba. Then his guides pointed him west to the island of Hispaniola. After that Columbus set sail back to Spain.

    Hernando Cortes
    Cortes sailed from Cuba to Mexico. He had more than 500 soldiers. He marched into the Aztec capital . Many Native Americans joined them as they moved in closer. Cortes took Moctezuma hostage and claimed all of Mexico for Spain. Aztecs rebelled and forced them to leave. About a yr. later Cortes returned. He had a larger force, and recaptured Tenochtitlan and destoroyed it. He then used the same methods to subdue the Aztecs in South Amer. that another conquistador Pizarro used.

    Ferdinand Magellan
    Magellan a Portuguese explorer sets out to find an Atlantic Pacific passage. Near the southern tip of present-day Argentina he found a narrow passage. This passage is know to day as the Strait of Magellan. Also he reached the Philippine Islands, and there he and several others were killed in the battle with Filipionos. Survivors fled/left in two ships. They reached Spain in Sept. 1522. 3yrs. after they begun 18 men aboard became first to circumnavigate the entire Earth.

    Francisco  Pizarro
    Pizarro landed on the coast of Peru in 1531. He wanted to search for the Incas who were said to have alot of gold. Then in September 1532 he led about 170 soldiers to the heart of the Inca Empire. He took the ruler hostage . He then asked for a ransom even though the Incas paid it he killed the ruler anyway. Then in November 1533 they defeated the Icas and captured their capital city of Cuzco.

    In the early 1600's French began to settle colonies. New France developed in different ways , than New Spain. French profited from furs and fish. They also traded with Native Americans. Also there was a trading post called Quebec City and also Champlain made a trading post known today as Nova Scotia. By 1672 New French had about or around 5,000 colonists.

    Champlain made the first off 11 voyages to explore and also map the lands along the St. Lawrence River. n 1603. Then later on he established a settelment on the banks of the St. Laweerance. He named this settelment Quebec. With this he ventured east , in the year of 1609. He also explored the large lake on the border of present day Vermont and New York that bears his name. These activities gave the French a influence in that region that lasted 150 years.

    In fall of 1608 a man named John Smith was sent from London to lead the colony of Jamestown. He drew up harsh rules including this rule that was the most important '' He who works not , eats not.'' In fall of 1609 Smith was sent back to England after being injured. With him gone started the ''Starving Time.''

    The Ducht traded with the Native American. Dutch West India Company decied to established a new permanent colony that the Dutch called New Netherlands. This was because trade was so profitable. 300 settlers came in 1624. Most settled in Fort Orange. Then another group settled at the mouth of Hudson River. Peter Minuit purchased islands from near by Indians and called it New Amsterdam.
  • Mayflower Compact

    Before they came aboard t41 men signed the Mayflower Compact. It said that goverment would make and follow " just and egual laws." Also that officeholder would be elected by colony adult men. This was the first document that American colonists gained a right to govern themselves.

    A minister of a church in the town of Salem. He believed that the Puritans should split entirely from the Church of England. Also he criticized colonists who had seized Native American lands. He thought that colonists should pay for their land. He then was forced to leave Massachusetts Bay in 1635. Then he moved south to Rhode Island where he bought land from the Native Americans. He then founded the town of Providence in 1635.

    Nathaniel Bacon was the leader of this rebellion. The rebellion was an organized force of 1,000 westerners that attacked and killed Native Americans. In this rebellion Bacon burned Jamestown forceing the governor to run away. The rebellion collapsed when Bacon died.

    Missanary who led the way in spreading Spainish influece was Father Eusebio Francisco Kino , known today as Texas and Arizona. Early misson took root in Texas was about 150 miles north of Rio Grande. The mission failed to covert Native Americans it attracted Spanish colonists. This mission became know as the city of San Antonio.
