Important Events and Battles in the Civil War Timeline

  • The Civil War Started

    The Civil War started on April 12, 1861. The Civil War started because the free states (the North) and the slave states (the South) had "uncompromising differences" of allowing slaves to be in the territories that hadn't yet become states.
  • The Battle of Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter happened on April 12, 1861 and ended on April 13, 1861. This battle took place in South Carolina. Ft. Sumter was a Confederate victory.
  • The 1st Battle of Bull Run

    The 1st Battle of Bull Run (also known as the Battle of Manassas) happened on July 21, 1861 in Virginia. This battle was a Confederate victory.
  • The Battle of Ironclads

    The Battle of Ironclads happened on March 8, 1862 and ended on March 9, 1862. This battle took place in Virginia. Neither the North or the South really won the battle but this showed them that wooden boats are no longer effective in battle.
  • The Battle of Shiloh

    The Battle of Shiloh happened on April 6, 1862 and ended on April 7, 1862 in Tennessee. The battle was a Union Victory.
  • The 2nd Battle of Bull Run

    The 2nd Battle of Bull Run started on August 28, 1862 and ended on August 30, 1862. This battle took place in Virginia. The Confederates won the battle.
  • The Battle of Antietam

    The Battle of Antietam happened on September 17, 1862 in Maryland. This battle was considered the bloodiest day in the Civil War. Neither side had won the battle but it was considered a strategic Union victory.
  • The Emancipation Proclamation

    The Emancipation Proclamation was a statement by Abraham Lincoln (who was president at the time) that freed all the slaves that were in the South. This statement was actually announced twice. It was first announced on September 22, 1862 and was announced on January 1, 1863 as the second time since the Confederacy did not agree to the statement the first time. Because of this, about 200,000 slaves that were set free joined the Union army, giving them a higher chance at winning the war.
  • The Battle of Fredericksburg

    The Battle of Fredricksburg started on December 11, 1862 and ended on December 15, 1862 in Virginia. The battle resulted as a Confederate victory.
  • The Battle of Vicksburg

    The Battle of Vicksburg started on May 18, 1863 and ended on July 4, 1863. This battle took place in Mississippi. This battle resulted as a huge victory for the Union because they were in control of the entire Mississippi River and was the "turning point" in the Civil War.
  • The Battle of Gettysburg

    The Battle of Gettysburg started on July 1, 1863 and ended on July 3, 1863. This battle took place in Pennsylvania. This battle was considered the deadliest battle in the Civil War. The battle was a Union victory.
  • The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House

    The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House started on May 8, 1864 and ended on May 19, 1864. This battle took place in Virginia. This battle wasn't a victory for either side but General Grant said that he wasn't going to stop until General Lee's army was destroyed.
  • Sherman's March to the Sea

    Sherman's March to the Sea was a battle that started on November 15, 1864 and ended on December 21, 1864. This march went from Atlanta to the Savannah in Georgia. The Union burned down farms, towns and cities to try to destroy the Confederate's will to fight. The whole city of Atlanta was burned to the ground from the march.
  • The Official End to the Civil War & the Battle of Appomattox

    On April 9, 1865, General Lee was forced to surrender to General Grant near the town of Appomattox Court House. This was the official end to the Civil War resulting the Civil War as a Union victory.
