    It ended on April 13, 1861. The shots at Fort Sumter were the first shots of the civil war, even though Fort Sumter wasnt counted as a battle. The confederates fired on the fort and it surrendered 34 hours later. Making it a conferderate victory.
  • 1st battle of Bull Run

    Also know as battle of Manassas, this battle is where Jackson got his nickname "Stonewall Jackson".
  • hampton Roads

    Lasted until March 9th 1862. It was the most important naval encounter of the civil war. Also the most famous significant of the history of naval warfare.
  • Shiloh

    It lasted until April 7, 1862. It was also called pittsburg landing. It ccured in Shiloh, Tennessee. the confederate army attacked the union army on the morning of April 6, 1862. It was a union victory.
  • 2nd Bull Run

    Also called second Manassas, the second Bull Run lasted for 2 days. It ended on August 30th 1862.

    The Union army headed by McClellan confronted General Lees army in Sharpsburg, Maryland. The battle lasted for 2 days and ended on september 18, 1862. It was the first major battle of the civil war to occur in the North.

    Fredricksburg lated for five days. It ended on the 15th of December. It also featured the first major opposed river crossing in American military history.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    It was passed on January 1, 1863 by president Abraham Lincoln. It freed all the slaves in the south. However it was only adressed to the statesthat seceded from the union, so it didnt apply to the border states. Also some of the southern states didnt follow the law because the unio was to far away to enforce it.

    The battle of Chancellorsville lasted for 7 days. It ended on May 6, 1863.

    The battle lasted for 3 days. It ended on July 3rd 1863. Lee was in charge of the conferderate forces, and union troops were lead by general George Meade. The turning point occured when Lee ordered pickett to attack the middle of the union line.

    It was fought just sutheast of Atlanta, Geogia. Union forces defeated the confederate forces that were defending the city. The city didnt fall until September 2, 1864.
  • Appomattox Courthouse

    Appomattox Courthouse
    Lee and Grant met in Appomattax Courthouse to arrange a surrender. It stated that after putting down their weapons, the confederates could return home in peace. Grant even gave food to the conferderate soldiers. The surrender at Appomattox Courthouse was the end of the civil war.

    Abraham Lincoln, 16th president of the United States, was assassinated while watching the comedy, " our American cousin". He was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth.
  • Ratification of the 13th amendment

    Ratification of the 13th amendment
    Lincoln thought the Emancipation Proclamation would be seen as a temporary war measure. So in 1865 he created the 13th amendment which made slavery illegal everywher in America. It was passed by congress January 31, 1865 and was ratified by the states on December 6, 1865.
