Abe Lincoln was the first republican president, and was the 16th president. The South andgered at the fact that he was capable of freeing all of the slaves. -

Lincoln declared the Union Blockade in 1861. It actually went on until 1865. The Union Blockade was important because it eventually led to the surrender of the Confederacy. -

The Battle at Fort Sumter lasted for two days. The Civil War begins. The fort was fired at with cannons, and was forced to surrender. -

Manassas (aka First Battle of Bull Run), was the first serious land battle of the Civil War. It was a Confederate victory. -
Monitor vs. Virginia Naval Battle
The goal for the Confederates in this battle was to break the Union's blockade. This battle ended the next day. It was the first battle fought on Ironclad ships. -
Battle of Shiloh
Confederate surprise attack on Gen.Grant's troops at Shiloh on the Tennessee River. With unprepared Union troops led to thousands of killed, or wounded soldiers. -
Battle at Chattanooga
Hoping to complicate the Union Soldiers... the Confederate soldiers split up. When one of the groups were fixing the railroad like they were told... they ran into the Union soldiers. -
Seven Days Battles
Seven Days Battles started on June 25, and ended on July 1, 1862. The aggresive fighting began on June 26 near Richmond, and lasted about five days. The battle caused the Union, along with the Confederate side to lose a large amount of people. -
2nd Battle of Manassas
The 2nd Battle of Manassas was caused by an offensive campaign from the Cnofederates. This battle lated for two days. The Confederates win the battle, and the Union retreats to Washington. -
Antietam
Antietam was the bloodiest day of U.S. military history. It was also the first major battle fought on free soil. By nightfall 26,000 men are dead, wounded, or missing. Lee then leaves to Virginia. -
Emancipation Proclamation
President Abe Lincoln orders that Confederate territories were to free all slaves. The slave-freeing angered the South. -
Battle at Chancellorsville
The Battle at Chancellorsville lasted until May 4th. The reason of this battle was because the Union crossed Rappahannock River to raid against General Lee's supplies line. -
Battle of Gettysburg
The turning point of the war turns against the South, causing the Confederates to lose the battle. The battle lasted for three days. -
Siege of Vicksburg
Vicksburg, the last Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River, surrenders to Gen. Grant, and the Army of the West. The Union is now in control of the Mississippi. -
Emancipation Proclamation takes effect
The purpose of the Emancipation Proclamation was to free slaves from the Confederates. It did take a while for it to actually happen though. The war to preserve the Union now becomes a struggle for the abolition of slavery. -
Gettysburg Address
In dedicatino of the Soldiers' National Cemetery at Gettysburg, Abe Lincoln delivers one of the most famous speeches of all time. He talked about the equalness that every human being shares. -
Ulysses S. Grant takes over Union Army
Lincoln assigns Grant to command all of the armies of the United States. Doing so, Grant was very successful. -
13th Amendment passed
The U.S. Congress approves the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, to abolish slavery. They came up with this because people thought the Emancipation Proclamation was temporary. -
Sherman Captures Atlanta
Atlanta, Georgia was captured by Sherman's Army. It was a gain for the Union, and it helped President Lincoln's bid for re-election. -

Abraham Lincoln is re-elected president, defeating Democrat George B. McClellan.The electoral process was interrupted by the Civil War. -

After destroying Atlanta's warehouses and railroad facilities, Sherman, with 62,000 men begins a March to the Sea. This is also known as Savannah Campaign. -

Robert E. Lee surrenders
This was his last stand with the army of Northern Virginia, and this was one of the last battles of the civil war. He planned to attack the Union but when he learned what he was up against he had no other choice but to surrender. -
Abe Lincoln Shot and Killed
While seeing a play at Forde's Theatre, Abe Lincloln was shot in the back of the head by John Wilkes Booth.
