    Malcom X confronts police catain in New York demanding to talk to Johnson Hinton. Hinton was an African-American who was beaten by the police and was taken to the police station with no medical attention. Malcom X has Hinton taken to Harlem Hospital.
  • John F. Kennedy and Civil Rights

    John F. Kennedy and Civil Rights
    President John F. Kennedy was sown into office on January 20th, 1961. In his inaugural address Kennedy promises to end racial discrimination.
  • MLK: "I Have a Dream"

    Martin Luther King Junior delivered his 17 minute long "I Have a Dream" speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on August 28th, 1963. His speech called for racial equality and that an end to descrimination be reached.

    The 24th Amendment is added to the United States Constitution on August 27th, The amendment prohibited Congress and individual states from imposing a poll tax on federal elections. Poll taxes in the south where African-Americans were kept from voting.

    Bloody Sunday was one of three marches in protest of racial descrimination. On March 7th, 1965 600 civil rights marchers were attacked by police. The next march resulted in 2,500 people turning around after crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge.

    The Fair Housing Act is passed allowing there be no descrimination when buying, selling, or renting a house to anyone of any race. Congress passed the bill in April of 1968 after President Lyndon B. Johnson urged them to do so.

    In November of 2008 Barack Obama was elected to be president-elect. This proved to America that African-Americans are capable of leading our country. Civil rights were fought for and this proved that they were won. Obama and Joe Biden were sworn into office on January 20th, 2009.
