    Exposure

    Greek people would leave disabled newborns outside to die
  • 1st institutions for care of physically and mentally disabled created in the U.S. This was eventually seen as a way to isolate and "contain" people with disabilities

  • Mental Deficiency Act

    Required school administration to identify students with a mental disability to be sent to institutions
  • Laws passed that recommended/ required the sterilization of disabled people

  • Organized protests

    The league for physically handicapped protested against the government that denied them jobs because of their disabilities. They also were protesting against testing fetusus for disabilities prior to birth.
  • Hitler ordered for the killing of sick and disabled people

  • late 1940's and 50's: disability support groups formed

  • Disabled Persons Employment Act

    Employers with over 20 employee had to have 3% of their employees with a disability
  • Late 1950's and 60's: Athletic competitions formed such as the national Wheelchair games, and Special Olympics

  • Institute of rehabilitation Medicine at New York University began research on innovations and adaptive aids to allow disabled people to live independantly

  • Bill Hargreaves

    Helped over 1,500 disable people into the work force
  • Presidential comittee formed to develop solutions to accomodate the needs of the disabled and their desire to integrate

  • Amendments broaden the definition of Disability to include more things
