Jackie Robinson
LinkJackie Robinson was the first African American player on a major league baseball team. He was awarded with three high honors including Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player, and Hall of Fame. Robinson was a civil rights activist he worked with Malcom X and MLKJ. His success in sports changed the US by breaking down racial barriers in Major League sports. He proved that it's not the persons skin color but their abilities that matter. -
De Facto V De Jure segregation
LinkDe facto is the latin term meaning "fact". De jure is the latin term meaning "lawful". Congress passed the Civil Rights Act, which outlawed de jure segregation. This act eliminated the Jim Crow laws and Helped end de facto segrgation between whites and blacks. Now it was no longer requiered to segregate whites and blacks but this does not mean that thigs would change. -
Brown Vs Board of Education
LinkBrown v Board was a supreme court case that was arguing if race based segregation of children into separate but equal public schools was constitutional or not. The case was argued on December 9th, 1952 and the supreme court came to a final rule on May 17th, 1954 ruling that the race based segreagation in public schools was in fact not constitutional and it violates the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment. -
Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott
LinkMrs. Rosa Parks an African American seamstres was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama for not surrendering her bus seat to a white bus rider. This was a first and made an uproar to to Civil Rights Movement showing individuals that its right to stand up for their own rights. African AMericans were having to force their way into being accepted in White American culture and to intergrate with one another. -
Martin Luther King Jr. & SCLC
LinkMartin Luther King Jr. was the leader of the SCLC (Southern Christain Leadership Conference) which is an African American civil rights organization. MLK was the example of non-violent civil disobedience along with many other activists. This organization made a stand for civil rights. They demonstrated to the people and government that they mean business. -
Central High School
LinkCentral High School was the site if forced school desegregation during the American Civil Rights Movement. This being the first high school to mix white and black children and have them use the same bathrooms and such made a huge impact on the rest of education in America. It showed other schools that it was possible and it motivated other schools to slowly start doing the same thing by choice. -
Sit-in Movement
LinkIn Greensboro, nc students in a non-violent mannor had a sit-in which is a form of protest by occupying an area, often to promote a political or social change. In this case it was to promote the civil rights movement. The people that came to protest will assist the political and social change on African American rights for the better. -
Freedom Riders
LinkFreedom Riders were civil rights activists who rode interstate buses into the segregated southern states to tes tthe US supreme court decisions for the Boynton vs Virginia and Irene Morgan vs Common Wealth of Virginia. The freedom ride started in Washington, D.C. and finished in New Orleans. This freedom ride demostrated not only to the supreme court but to America that they were not affrade of angry withe southerners and stood up for the civil rights movement and that nothing would stop them. -
March on Washington "I Have A Dream"
Link The march on Washington event was for jobs and freedom for African Americans. It was the largest political rallie for human rights in the U.S. history for the civil rights movement which is also where MLK delievered his historic"I have a dream" speech. This march is what helped pass the Civil Rights Act in congress. -
Violence in Birmingham "Letters from a Birmingham Jail"
LinkIn Birmingham, Alabama the Ku Klux Clan bombed the 16th street Baptist church killing 4 African Americans and then began shooting at the people and killed another 2. Meanwhile the KKK started 5 raging fires in black business establishments. This riot and violence shows severely that the civil rights fight was really a war that was getting out of hand. -
Malcolm X
LinkMalcolm X (a.k.a. Malcolm Little) was an African American Muslum minister and a human rights activist. Malcolm X advocated the seperation black and white Americans. He demonstrated black self-determination and black self-defense and showed the willingness to work with civil right leaders to stand up for what he believes in. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964

Black Power & Black Panthers
LinkThe Black Panther Party was an African American revolutionist organization active in the U.S. from 1966-1982. The Black Panthers increased black power to inspire African Americans to stand up for their rights and fight back. The group helped influence social change for the civil rights movement. -
Thurgood Marshall
LinkThurgood Marshall was in office from October 2nd, 1967-October 1st, 1991. Marchall was the first United States Supreme Court Associate Justice to be African American. Today there is only one African American on the supreme cour. This shows that polotics are becomeing more intergrated and civil rights are expanding.
