In 1957, Noam Chomsky published his book called "Syntactic Structures". Because of the publication of his book, Chomsky became known as one of the most influential people in the study of linguistics and helped turn linguistics into a science. In his book he established what is known as the Chomsky hierarchy of grammar which is is a breakdown of formal grammar. He classifies grammar into four types, from type-0 to type-3.

Two years after his publication of Syntactic Structures, Chomsky also reviewed his rival's work called Verbal Behavior. In Verbal Behavior, B. F. Skinner argued that Behaviorism is how a language is mainly learned or taught. "The behaviorist theory believes that “infants learn oral language from other human role models through a process involving imitation, rewards, and practice.

Between 1957 and 1959 Chomsky proposed his idea his idea of universal grammar. This theory initially stated that "humans possess innate faculties related to the acquisition of language." (Britannca) Naturally, Chomsky's theory has evolved over the years but it still contains the same underlying idea that all languages have the same categories and restrictions that are required in order to communicate in their respective language.

Chomsky’s minimalist program, not a theory, has been developing from his univeral theory and generative grammar theory since the early 1990’s. One of the goals of the minimalist program is to set forth to further develop the principles of economy of derivation and economy of representation. Economy of derivation is a principle that helps match interpretable features with uninterpretable features. Economy of representation is a principle that structure in grammar exists for a purpose.
