Charles Darwin: February 12, 1809-April 19, 1882

  • HMS Beagle

Charles Darwin participated as a naturalist on a five year voyage to study various aspects of science in the natural world. Not long after starting the trip, Charles published his first major work on his observations called Beagle Travel Zoology. In his research, he kept detailed notes of the different places that they visited and the wildlife located there. This included the Canary Islands, South America, The Galapagos Islands, Australia, New Zealand, and the Cape of Good Hope.
  • Theory of Evolution- Origin of Species

Darwin summarized evolution into three different principles. The first principle is variation. Amongst the individuals in a population there will be a variation in physiology, morphology, and behavior. The second principle is heredity. This states that offspring will resemble their parents more than resembling unrelated individuals. The last principle is selection. This states that some forms have the capability of surviving and reproducing than other form in a given environment.

Charles Darwin's theory that stated that every species evolved from another previous species through natural selection and wasn't created by God. One of he statements was that some individuals are not adaptable to the environment that they are in. The ones that are suited are more likely to reproduce and pass on those adaptable traits to future generations.
  • Sexual Selection

Darwin's theory of sexual selection stated that members of one sex will try to compete with members of the same sex for the opposite sex's favor. Essentially, to find the most opportune mate one will go through lengths in order to reproduce and further their bloodline. This gave the scientific community one of the reasons why animals choose to reproduce.
