    Birth
    Charles Robert Darwin, was born 12FEB1809. Charles was the second son of doctor Robert Waring Darwin and of Susannah Wedgwood. Grandson Erasmus Darwin, author of Zoonomia; or the Laws of Organic Life.(1)
  • Edinburg Education

    Darwin’s father was set on his son following in his footsteps—as a doctor. At 16, his father signed him up for medical school at Edinburg, though he did not enjoy the anatomy focused education, and soon began skipping class, but he did find an interest in learning about taxidermy at the Edinburgh Museum.
  • Cambridge Education

    Furious with Charles' lack in focus, his father switched him to Cambridge in 1828, to take up a sensible career as a parson. Charles fell in with the Naturalists at the school and graduated in 1831, with his Bachelors of Arts.

    Soon after graduating, he was offered a chance to ride as ship's company on the HMS Beagle, for an observation trip to help map out South America, and observe the ecological systems as an amateur naturalist.(2)

    After returning from the expedition, Charles began writing about his discoveries. First he studied specimens and fossils collected during his time on the Beagle, and collaborated with the London Zoo on his book "Zoology of the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle". He spent much time tweaking and fixing his theory on evolution. His final work was finally published (after about 2 decades) in 1859: "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection".

    Charles Darwin died of a heart attack on 19APR1882, and was laid to rest at buried in the north aisle of the nave of Westminster Abbey, not far from Sir Isaac Newton.
