  • Chapel Street Renamed

    Chapel Street was renamed from Chapel Road to chapel Street in the 1840' s after the costruction of the independent chapel on its eastern side and chapel street was formed
  • Land Sale On Chapel

    Chapel Street begun to have land sales thorught the 1840's and 50's and soon more shops and dwelligns were built along Chapel street and the street was levelled, surfaced and partially drained.
  • Chapel Street Changes

    During the 19th century many changes came to chapel street for example the general store dissapeared and more speaclist stores appeared around the like liquor stores and buthers and confectionary stores. Many clothing businesses came in aswell like dressmakers and tailors also furniture shops. Parhran also during this period gained alot of watch makers jewllers and clockmakers.
  • Transport on Chapel

    By the 1860's chapel street had its own defined footpaths using red gum planks along the road line and an iron bridge was built to replace the ferry that across the yarra rive. And a regualar horse drawn omnibus carried passengers into the city of melbourne via torak road near chapel street.

    Rapid Subdivision followed in the 1860's as more activty occured on Chapel Street places like the Parahan town hall court house and mechanics insitiute where erected. Local businesses where moving in and creating more jobs. So places like the parahan market and Parahan was developed.

    The first two decades of the 20th century saw the introduction of electrcity to both the trams of chapel street and also the train network aswell this allowed for easier access to the city. This also helped develope the surronding area.

    World war had a significant impact on Chapel in terms of shopping as people where given ration cards which only allowed them to buy certain items and food was in short supply and this got rid of friday afternoon shopping as there was blackout regualtions.

    Chapel Street has continued to grow and develope and is one of melbourne most popular shopping strips and has contiued to expand while keeping its old heritage builidng and making way always for new stores and remains a centre point for shopping and restaurants
