    The WILMOT PROVISO was a bill to outlaw slavery in any territory the United States mighe acquire tfrom the War with Mexico. Slaveholders believed that congress had no right to prevent them from bringing slaves into any of the territories, and southerners prevented it from passing the senate.     Compromise of 1850
    The COMPROMISE OF1850 was a debate of how to deal with slavery in the lands gained from the War of Mexico. Southerners wanted to divede California in half making the Norhern half a free state and the Southern half a slave state. Slave states would become a minority in the senate just as they were in the house. In March of 1850, California applied to be admitted as a free state.   • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    The FUGITIVE SLAVE ACT was a bill that accused fugitives could be held without and arrest warrant. They had no right to a jury trial. Instead , a federal commissioner ruled on each case. Southerners supported this act because they considered slaves to be property. This act also required Northerners to help recapture runaway slaves. Southern slave catchers were allowed to roam the North. This is a picture of a sign warning all colored people that there are slave catchers looking for them.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    UNCLE TOM'S CABIN was a novel to describe the escape of a slave named Eliza and her baby across the Ohio River. Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote it. This book was popular in the North, but Southerners argued that the book presented a false picture of the South and slavery. Uncle Tom's Cabin created tension between the North and South.     The FORMATON OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY was started becuase of a girl named Emily Edmondson, a former slave. Her story motivated various anti-slavery groups to create the Republican Party. Also it was started when "Bleeding Kansas" and " Bleeding Sumner" became ralying cries for antislavery Northerners. With their anger, antislavery forces united to create the Republican Party.

  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    The KANSAS-NEBRASKA ACT was a bill to organize the Nebraska territory. It proposed to divide the territory into two parts-Nebraska and Kansas. Senator Douglass started this. To get Southerner suppport, Douglass suggested that popular soverighty should be used to decide a territory becomes either a free or slave state. Southerners liked the bill because people would be able to vote for slavery where it had been banned. The bill did pass.Pic-what happened to all of the states after the act passed.

    Caning of Charles Sumner
    CHARLES SUMNER was the senator of Massachusetts. He was beaten unconscious with his cane by Preston Brooks that caused severe injuries that disabled him for years. Brooks beat him becuase during his speeech he insulted A.P Butler, a senator from South Carolina. Brooks was cheered on in the South by what he did, but Northerners were shocked at the violence in the senate. This is a picture of Brooks beating Sumner.

    DREAD SCOTT reached the supreme court in 1856. He was a slave in Missouri. His owner died, and he argued that he was a free man becuse he had lived in territories where slavery was illegal. The court ruled against Scott. He was bound by Missouri's slave code because he lived in Missouri. pic- this is Dread Scott.
  • Attack on Harper's Ferry

    Attack on Harper's Ferry
    John Brown planed to capture weapons in the U.S. arsenal at HARPER'S FERRY, Virginia. Brown was tried for murder and betrayal of his country or treason. He was convicted and sentenced to hang due to his attack at Harper's Ferry. Southerners were enraged by Brown's actions and scared by the Northern reactions to his death. This picture is when Brown tried to capture weapons from Harpers Ferry.
  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
    The ELECTION OF 1860 turned into two different races for the presidency-one in the North and one in the South. Lincoln defeated Douglas in the North. Lincoln said he would not abolish slavery, but the Southerners still did not trust him. Many were sure that he and other Republicans would move to ban slavery. So, white Southerners saw the Republican victory as a threat to their way of life.

  • Secession

    SECESSION- When Lincoln won the election, Southern states warned they would secede or withdraw from the union. They based their arguments on states rights. They formed the Confederate states of America. They named Jefferson Davis president of the Confederacy. The Crittenden Compromise was prevented to congress in early 1861, but it was defeated in the Senate.

  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    BLEEDING KANSAS was the attack known as Potawatomie Massacre which caused a civil war in Kansas and the territory became known as "Bleeding Kansas." John Brown, an extreme abolitionist led 7 other men in a massacre of 5 of his proslavery neighbors becuse a proslavery mob looted the town of Lawrence, Kansas.
