Causes of the American Revolution

  • End of the French and Indian War

    The Frech and Indian War was a seven year war fought between the French and the British over the Ohio River Valley. It ended on February 10, 1773, with the signing of The Treaty of Paris. The end of the war caused tension between the colonist and Great Britain, because the British were making colonist pay for the war. The British also passed the Proclamation of 1773.

    Proclamation of 1763
    The British king declared all colonist to remain East of the Appalachian. This made the colonist angry, because they were being told they cant use the land they fought for.
  • The Sugar Act

    The Sugar Act
    Law that put a tax on foreign refined sugar and increased taxes on coffee, indigo, and certain wines in 1764. It banned importation of rum and French wines. These taxes were raised without the consent of the colonists. This made the colonist upset.
  • The Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act
    Act passed in 1765 that put taxes on everything made out of paper. Every newspaper and public/lgal document had to have a stmp or British seal on it. The colonist had been sending letters for free for many years, and they didn't think they should have to pay for it.
  • The Townshend Acts

    The Townshend Acts
    Act passsed by the British Parliament that put taxes on coffee, lead, glass, and more.It was passed shortly after the Stamp Act. They were to created to collect revenues from the colonist.The colonist didn't like this, so they decided to boycott all English goods.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    Shooting of American British troops on March 5, 1770 where five colonist were killed.Paul Revere, a raadical, used this as a propoganda by making it look like innocent people were being killed. The Boston Massacre struck fear in some colonist , and made some colinist angry and eager for revenge. This is important, because it contributes to the start of the American Revolution.

    The British king put taxes on all British tea. At this time drinking tea was a daily thing for colonist. They thought they were being taxed too much, and didnt want to pay tax on tea. The colonist reacted by boycotting all British Tea.The Tea Act also lead up to The Boston Tea Party.

    Frustrated because of the tea act, The Sons of Liberty disgused themselves as Mohawk Indians, and dumped 342 crates of British tea into the harbor.

    The Intolerable Acts , also known as the Coercive Acts, was a series of laws passed from.1774-1775. by the king of Britain as a punishment to the colonist. This was the king's respons to the Boston Tea Party
  • The Battle of Lexington and Concord

    The Battle of Lexington and Concord
    The first shot starting the Revolutionary War was fired on April 18, 1775, in Lexington, Massachusetts. The British General Thomas Gage sent 700 troops to destroy the weapons the colonist had stored in Concord. The British soldiers also planned to arrest Samuel Adams and John Hancock, two important leaders of the patriotic movement.
