The United Nations is created
50 countries led by Britain, the Soviet Union, United States and Canada met in San Francisco outlining four goals: to keep world peace, preventing new wars, encourage equality and improve the standard livign of nations. -
World War II Ends
Canada played a significant role to the Allied victory of the Second World War. They fought all the way from the beginning in the Battle of Britain to the invasion of Normandy and lastly the liberation of Holland. -
United Nations' Declaration of Human Rights
As Eleanor Roosevelt would call it, this was the "Magna Carta of Mankind". This declaration protected human rights. Canada'a Bill of Rights and Charter of Rights and Freedom were modeled after this. As a result, it opened Canada's to multiculturalism after the Second World War. One of the many who helped draw up UN's Declaration of Human Rights was Canadian John Humphrey. -
Creation of NATO
NATO, global military defence system whose job is to maintain world peace and order. Canada was a part of NATO. -
Communist take control of China
After about two decades of civil war, the communist were victorious and took over China led by Mao Zedong. This event gave birth to the "People's Republic of China." -

Korean War
During the Cold War, Korea was split to two parts; the communist North Korea and the democratic South Korea. This separation led to a clash between the two regions. North Korea began to invade South Korea. As a response to this, UN plead for North Korean troops to withdraw. North Korea, supported by the Soviets while South Korea was supported by UN. 25000 Canadian men participated in this war while 312 lost their lives. -

The WARSAW Pact was a defence alliance led by the Soviet Union in opposition to UN's NATO forces. -

Vietnam War
Like Korea, Vietnam was split into two regions, the communist-North and anti-communist and partially democratic-South. As a result a civil war broke out. The South was supported by the UN who were determined to stop the spread of communism. The war lasted for two decades which ended badly with the victory of the communist. -

Canada's overwhelming contribution in UN's peacekeeping force is well known all over the world. They have been part in almost every UN mission for peace. -
Lester Pearson and the Suez Crisis
When Egyptian president Nasser claimed ownership of the Suez Canal, the British and the French threathened to attack Egypt. As a result, UN was forced to make decisive actions and turned to Lester Pearson for answers. He proposed the creation of United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) whose sole purpose was to keep peace among opposing countries. Lester Pearson won the Nobel Peace Prize for his major contribution in ending the Suez Crisis. -

Berlin Wall is built
The construction of the Berlin Wall marked the symbol of the Cold War. This wall created the separation between communism and democracy which as a result split the world into two oppposing ideologies. -
The Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis posed a nuclear war threat as the Soviets stockpiled their nuclear weapons in Cuba. In response to this, the US naval forces blockaded Cuba and asked the Soviets to stop their nuclear operations. As a result, the Soviets retreated. -
Cyprus dispute
UN peacekeeping force which included Canada, FInland, Ireland, Sweden and the UK were stationed in Cyprus to keep peace in the island. -

Soviet invasion of Afghanistan
On December of 1979, the Soviets invaded Afghanistan who was in the brink of civil war. Despite UN's preventive plead, Russia vetoed the plea and therefore continued on with the invasion. -
