    Reign of James I

    His reign was important because it was the first time England and Scotland had the same monarch. He was the first monarch of England from the House of Stuart.
  • Founding of Virginia

    The Virginia colony was founded in 1607 by several colonists and was funded by the London Company. The colony was named after Queen Elizabeth I of England- "The Virgin Queen".
  • Founding of Jamestown

    Decided on location of the first permanent British settlement in North America Jamestown Virginia
  • House of Burgesses

    Governor George Yeardley immediately gave notice that the Virginia colony would establish a legislative assembly which resulted in the House of Burgesses.

    A set of rules for self-governance established by the English settlers who traveled to the New World on the Mayflower.

    John Mason and Ferdinando Gorges were given a land grant by the Council for New England. Only three years after the Pilgrim's landed at Plymouth, the first settlers arrived.

    Originally a Dutch colony called New Amsterdam New York was founded by Peter Minuit in 1626 on Manhattan Island.Later in 1664 the Dutch surrendered the colony to the English and it was renamed New York, after the Duke of York.
  • Founding of Massachusetts Bay Colony

    The Massachusetts Bay Colony was founded by the owners of the Massachusetts Bay Company. The population's majority was Puritan as they went to Massachusetts seeking refuge from religious persecution in England.
  • Founding of Maryland

    George Calvert received a royal charter for land in Maryland from King Charles I. His son, Cecil Calvert, was able to finish out his father's plans after his death. Maryland became a safe haven for Catholics and other persecuted people (but not all).

    The colony of Rhode Island was founded by Anne Hutchinson and Roger Williams who left their colony due to their questioning of the Puritan Church. It was one of the most liberal colonies due to its religious and political freedom.

    Connecticut was founded by Thomas Hooker and John Haynes, the colony later became a model for self government.

    Charles II was king of England. He gave the land south of Virginia to eight proprietors. These men founded the Carolina colony which eventually split into North and South Carolina.

    Founded in 1681 by William Penn. Penn was issued a land grant by King Charles II largely because of a significant debt owed to his father, Admiral Penn. It was named Pennsylvania, which means Penn's Woods, after Admiral Penn.
