    World War I. As an outcome of WWI the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes is formed and quickly regains control of Kosovo. As a minority, the Albanians are promised extensive minority rights treaties. The Albanians claim the guarantees are never implemented and that the Serbs engage in widespread massacres and repression in the 1920s. The Serbs accuse the Albanians of fomenting discontent in Kosovo.

    A Bosnian Serb student, Gavrilo Princip, assassinates the Austrian archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo. This precipitates World War I.

    In response to Slovenia, the Yugoslav army responds with force and over a 10-day period the two countries are at war . The Yugoslav army withdraws. War breaks out immediately upon Croatia’s declaration of independence. The Serbian army joins forces with Croatian Serbs in the east of the country to expel Croats. During this time the Serbs create the self-declared Republic of Serbian Krajina.

    Croat and Muslim nationalists form tactical alliance and outvote Serbs at independence referendum.
    War breaks out and Serbs quickly assume control of over half the republic. Killings and deportations are rampant in the newly-proclaimed Serb Republic, but also widespread in Muslim and Croat-controlled areas.

    March - UN tribunal in The Hague finds former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic guilty of genocide and war crimes - including genocide over the 1995 Srebrenica massacre - and sentences him to 40 years in jail.
