The "Black Ships" Open Japan
Until America attacked Japan was closed to trade with anyone because they thought that foreigners would have a bad influence on them. Then in 1853 Matthew Perry went to Japan with big black ships and said he would attack Japan if they did not open for trade. This opened trade but now Japan had a grudge on the US and would attack us later. -
A Strong and Independent Japan
Japan was now in the world and to become a strong nation they had to change some things. A new ruler Mutsuhito was now emperor and he acquired the name Meiji and went on to change Japan forever. He wanted to acquire money and build a military. That's exactly what they did and in a couple years Japan had great wealth and was a very powerful nation. -
USA Gets Rough
The US who was not looking overseas was about to take a step outside their comfort zone. Seeing nations all trying to take China territory the big US got upset because it would ruin the trade. USA developed an "open door" policy. This forced Japan to give up its land in China which made the Japanese mad and also US took Hawaii which got Japan more upset with us. -
Great Depression
The markets and banks all failed. This was a terrible time for everyone. The economy turned into a wreck and no one had any money. People would wait for hours to get some food. Japan was hit very had with no natural resources they had to trade things to get the resources they needed and other countries were raising tariffs which put Japan in a tight spot. They had to get aggressive to get what they needed. They did this by going into battles and taking land and territories. -
Japan Goes Killer
Japan with all that hatred had to do something they went to war against China and devastated the country killing thousands of thousands of people. America and many others now had hatred for Japan. With Japan getting aggressive and putting US in danger the president had to act. He outlawed certain products to Japan and made a new military program. With the start of world war two US was worried about nations with evil rulers like Hitler. Japan was getting upset and would strike. -
New Aliances
Japan strikes back by joining forces. They join with the German and Italian forces. This was the start of a war and the sides were chosen. President Roosevelt acts by taking Japans money and land. He also bans all products going into Japan and so does US friends. With no resources to continue its wars Japan had to act and go to war to take the things it needed. But before doing that it had to destroy the US naval fleet. -
The attack begins
Tojo became Japans prime minister and looked overseas to attack the US. But where would he attack it was unknown. He got his planes up and running and prepped the mission. His planes would travel miles to get to Hawaii and would have to do it in secret. While this was going on Japan was still negotiating trade with US so we did not think they would attack. Then US decoded a message that they would attack in a big strike but did not think it would be all the way in Hawaii. -
It Happens
The Japan fleet of planes touch down into their destination and attack. They bombed our harbor and decimated our fleet which killed many and was very costly loss. This would mark the entry of the US into the war and got the big USA fully involved. This surprise Areal attack stunned USA who could do nothing but watch as Japan ships dropped the bombs on us destroying everything in there path. It was one of the most heavy losses for the USA and will be remembered in the books forever. -
Martial Law
Poindexter declares Hawaii state of martial law. Which means the military has control over the population. They sent all local Japanese to camps without regard to their rights.
