    Increase in African American Slaves

    Between 1830 and 1860 ammount of african americans in the United States almost doubles from 2.3 million to 4.4 million. In 1830 there are 320,000 free, but in 1860 there are 500,000 free blacks.
  • Turner's Rebellion

    August 21, 1831 South Hampton Virginia. There was a large massacre. Nat Turner lead an attack from farm to farm over the coarse of 2 days they slaughtered 60 people. They severe limbs crush skulls. People start ti just kill people. Nat Turner is hanged and in the end around 200 african americans were killed as a part of this.   • Wilmot Proviso

    David Wilmot is a congressman from Pennsylvania, and proposes an ammendmant to a military appropriations bill. Neither Slavery nor Involuntary servitude shall exist in any terretory gained from Mexico. This would create more free states than slave states. In 1846 this does not pass congress. Terretories belonged to everyone. State to sovereignty. Wilmot does not appose slavery. Terretories belong to all states making slavery legal. State sovreignty says that the federal government cannot stop.

    Polk claims the Rio Grande as the southern border of the United States. Gen Zachary Taylor to claim the Rio Grande as the border. -April 24 1846 -Mexicans kill 11, and capture 63.

    Gold RushJames Marshal finds gold particles near Sacremento CA. Word gets out that there are fortunes to be made in California. A ton of people come to California. Only 1/7 of people that move to CA are women. In 1850 40% of population is foreign born. Califonria becomes the land of oppurtunity and cosmapolitan. Some people become very rich because of this.   • Prigg vs Pennsylvania

    Prigg crosses into PA which is a free state to capture his slave. In order to remove her slave Margaret Morgan. The local officials require documents for Prigg to return the slave. The North starts to make laws to make it more diffecult to for slave owners to get slaves back. The documents that Prigg submits is nto enough to show owner ship of Margaret or her children.   • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave ActOne of the elements of the compromise of 1850. Its bassis is in article IV (4) section 2. No person held to service or labor in one state. If a slave escapes a slave state it does not make them free. He will be delivered to a slave owner. Runaway slaves will be retuned.Fugitive slave law in 1793. Another law affirms this and alows owners to cross state lines and capture runaway slaves. Northern states are getting rid of slavery.

    Written by Harriet Beechor Stowe in 1851. Book describes agony that a slave family faces. The book describes a mothers attempt to bring her, and her beliefs into the world. There is a distinctiont hat harriet beacher stowe would like to make. It is an indictment. A story everyone can relate to. It’s a struggle. Not received well in the south. Book sold 300,000 copies in 9 months, and 1 million in two years.

    Kansas Nebraska Bill1854. Douglas was involved with this.Wanted to establish the kansas nebraska terretory. All questions about slavery in these terretories would be put to rest.The south will vote for bill if they take away the southern boarder of the missouri as the line for slavery. Theyw ant it to go north.

    Republican PartyThe republican party is started in 1854. It is comprised of anti-slavery whigs, Democrats, and Free Soilers. The Whigs and the Democratic parties are actualy parties, but they start having differences. The National Party starts to split. Democrats lose about 25% of their party to the republicans. The North which is mostly democratic starts to lose their grownd to the republicans. They want to keep slavery out of southern states. They are also Homesteaders. Traction is gained.

  • Panic of 1857

    There was a slowing internation economy. And an over expansion of domestic economy. North is more effected because they are based on factories, and production. Railroads begin to go nowhere because banks cannot be paid back from railroads. In 1830 there were 23 miles of there miles of track, by 1850 there are 30,000 miles of track. Railroads became in a struggle to sell tickets and get people to ride. Stocks went down on railroads.

    Dred Scott DecisionThis was during 1857. Dred Scott follows his slave owner into illinoise, Wisconsin and Minnesota. While traveiling he marries a woman from Minnesota. Dred Scott’s owner dies in Missuouri which is a slave state. Dred Scott claims that he should be free because he lived in free states. Slavery is barred in the areas he lived making him free. He wins at first then loses on an appeal. This then goes to the supreme coart in march of 1857. Is declared not a citizen.

  • Lecompton Constitution

    A constitution for state hood is drawn up, and they put it in a vote. This is a pro slavery constitution, and it is defeated overwhelmingly. President Buchanan puts forth Kansas as a slave state. People are upset because of this and it does not go through Kansas. They put forht the same constitution again in 1858. It failed again in 1858. The president is for Kansas, but it does not become a slave state. Another party comes out of this.
  • John Brown

    Harper’s Ferry (oct 16,1859) Violent abolitionist. He will go to any mesure to free slavery. Both parents are white. Bleeding kansas, He is a part of the organization. He leads a small band of whites, and blacks. They attack a federal arsenal. This happens in harpers ferry virginia. The hope is that they will put a band on slavery. They fail to capture the arsenal. He is executed in december of 1859 as a result of this. He is seen as a martyr by some, but a villian by others.
  • Undergroung Railroad

    Underground RailroadMoves hundreds of slaves a year. It is a loose network. Harriet Tubman led the underground railroad. Homes are called stations along the way. Station masters ran the underground railroad. People who financed this were issued stock. Conductors moved slaves from house to house. Slaves would move at night 10-20 miles. Stay station till masters were allerted they were coming. This was financed by vigilance communities. One of the most well known particiants is Harriet tubman.
  • South Carolina breaks away from the Union

    A man named Crittendon proposes to save the union by taking the line drawn up in the Missouri compromise and extend it through the territories. The representatives in the south do not want to act on this because they want a popular sovergnty. These areas will be slave states and all the states north would be free. The southern representatives want state soveirgnty. The north does not want slavery to expand. This fails. South Carolina votes to succeed from the Union. December 20, 1860. The declar
