    A message/warning from President James Monroe that European powers should stop further colonization in the Western Hemisphere and to stop influence in the Americas.
  • Mexican American War

    James K. Polk was a believer of manifest destiny and used his political power to try and achieve this. He attempted to but Mexican territories from the Mexican government, but was declined. Mexican troops attacked US soldiers and then attacked the American fort on the Rio Grande river. Congress declared war on Mexico on May, 13. American troops to took Mexico City, Mexico's capital, in September, 1847. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed on February 2, 1848. The motive was politics.
  • Actions in Japn

    Commodore Mathew Perry sailed to Japan 4 US navy ships to show willingness of advanced firepower to convince the Japanese to trade with the US. Brought gifts for the Japanese Emperor to show the superiority of western culture. Japan reluctantly opened itself to the US, rather than be forced to do so. The US and Japan signed a treaty in 1858. The motive was profit and easy access to refueling ports, to strengthen the navy.
  • Purchase of Alaska

    The US bought Alaska from Russia after the Civil War had ended. The purchase was thought to be a failure for 30 years, until a gold deposit was found in 1896. That mine led the US to the Klondike gold fields. Alaska became a state on January 3, 1959. The motive for buying Alaska was profit.
