    European trade with Africa becomes well established
    To the Europeans, Africa was a key supllier of industrial products and a great source of raw matierials. Some of these resources were the copper and tin located in the Congo. Cash crop plantations were soon created to grow palm oil, cocoa, rubber and peanuts. Becuase of these cash crops farmers couldn't grow the food necesarry to provide for the people.

    East India Company collapses due to Sepoy Rebellion; British Raj begins
    The Sepoey Rebellion was the result of a rumor spreading that the grease on the guns of the sepoys was made from the fat of animals considered sacred in their religion. With the help of British troops, it took the East India company to regain control of India. The time period after this where British government had control over India was known as the Raj and took place during Queen Victoria's reign.
  • Suez Canal links Mediterranean and Red Seas

    Isma'il started the construction of the Suez Canal which linked the Mediterranean and Red Seas. The canal went way over budget and Egypt could not pay the French their debt. This is when the British took control of the financial part of the canal and then took control of Egypt.

    Berlin Conference convenes to discuss terms for African colonization
    The Berlin conference held by King Leopold, was a gathering of the nations to divvy up the land of Africa between them. Africans were the only ones who did not attend this confrence and they had no say in how the land was divided. The way a nation gained control of land was by claiming the land then proving they could control it.
  • 1893 Queen Liliuokalani takes the throne of Hawaii

    1893 Queen Liliuokalani takes the throne of Hawaii
    To give herself greater power and restore the political power of the Hawaiians, Liliuokalani pushed for a new constitution to be published. Eventually, Sanford Dole (pineapples!) took over and was named president of Hawaii.

    Ethiopians defeat the invading Italians at the Battle of Adwa
    Menelik declared war agains the Italians when he discovered that the wording between their two treaties was different. Menelik was successfull in defeating the Italians.

    Spanish-American War breaks out; Puerto Rico, Spain, and the Philippines taken from Spain
    The Spanish-American War was a conflict between Spain and the US over the liberation issues of Cuba. The war began when Spain declined there resolution of the Cuban fight for independance.
  • Boer War in South Africa

    Boer War in South Africa
    The first Dutch settlers, known as the Boers went to war with the British over land issues. This was the first total war. Guerrilla tactics and concentration camps were both used. The British defeated the Boers.
  • Most of Africa is under European control

    Most of Africa is under European control
    During the time Europe controlled Africa, Africa was greatly influenced and changed. Many lost land, independance, and their life. Their traditions where sometimes lost.
