    General William Howe and his soldiers arrived in New York, as a large army. When August came around, MORE soldiers arrived, as well as around nine thousand Hessian merceneries. For many months the armys quarreled, until the American army was defeated. By December they were in New Jersey.

    Washington Surprised Hessians at Trenton
    Washington knew that December 31st was coming around, that's when his army would get to go home. So, in order to get some of these men to stay and get more to enlist, he invaded, and threw a surprise attack at the Hessians camp, located in Trenton. After this victory, more Americans were drawn to enlisting.

    The battle at Princeton happened only eight days after the Battle in Trenton, New Jersey. When he won this battle it was an enlightenment.. He proved to the Britons that America was willing and able to fight. And inspired citezens to enlist.

    The Battles of Saratoga

    The first battle Benedict Arnold and General Horatio Gates attacked at the bridge and Freeman's Farm. They charged repeatedly and "inflicted heavy casualties." The British held postition. On October 7 another battle came. Arnold was daring he galloped through the battlefield, "like a madman." Burgoyne's army eventually retreated. Burgoyne's army set camp in Saratoga and the Continental Army surrounded them and fired non-stop, until BuyrgoyneSurrendered.ArnoldMariiedALoyalistAndAlmostBetrayedArmy

    Americans Suffer at Valley Forge

    Soldiers went with out clothes for a period of time. Often injuried they would (non purposly) leave tracks of blood on the frozen ground. The unbelievable thing is, when they reached the camp, nothing really changed. They did get amputations and some men died. They were sick and starving, often stealing animals from locals so they could eat. They stayed at Valley Forge until winter past. poor soldiers :(

    Clark Captured Kaskaskia
    George Rogers Clark and frontiersmen traveled to the Ohio River, on the way they picked up men to help with the battle, he had about 200 men. They then took a boat and then traveled by foot to Kaskaskia, a British post on the Mississippi River, and easily captured the post.

    British Defeated Gates at Camden
    Baron de Kalb formed the southern Continental Army and General Horatio Gates took them with him and he also took 2000 untrained militiamen and headed to Camden to challenge British General Lord Cornwallis. On his way he bumped into Francis Marion, aka Swamp Fox, and with him a group of miserable militiamen, about 20. Swamp Fox told Gates of the Carolina swamps. Gates sent Francis to destroy boats Santee River, so the British would have no communications with Charles Town.

    In August, Gate finally ran into British troops outside of Camden. The Americans were in horrible shape. Not only that, but Gates also put the untrained militia in the front! When the Brtish attacked, the untrained militia ran away, and with them, came Gates! Baron de Kalb's army stayed and recieved fatal wounds.

    The French actually helped the American's in 1776 by providing supplies, but didn't officially become allies until 1778 (singing two treaties), because they wanted to make sure they wouldn't loose to Britain again. They helped again in 1779, by getting Spain to ally with America.

    The British captured most of Georgia by 1780. The source of their success was the port they captured in 1778, the port of Savannah, Georgia.

    Clark Captured Vincennes
    Clark rasised an army and capture the British forces that were on the Westiern frontier with 200 men. A small group of his captured Vincennes, that was taken back by British forces under Henry Hamilton. In February the banks were flooded and overflowing, Hamilton did not expect the attack. Clark and his men traveled through the high icy swamps. They threw the surprise attack and tricked him (pretends to have lots of men) and captures Vinvennes.

    Jones Defeated The Serapis
    This naval battle took place near Britian. Jones (whose ship was called the Bonhomme Richard) saw two warships gaurding supply ships. He decided to attack the larger of the two named Serapis. They grew close and locked together. They shot and seriously damaged eachother's ships. the Serapis began to crack and fall, so the British Navy gave in. Jones ships was going to sink, so they actually sailed back on the Serapis!

    The Battle of Kings Mountain
    This battle was fought in North and South Carolina. After many Britians surrendered, we sought out for revenge, hanging or shooting them, because of Loyalist raides and an earlier incident when the British had butchered Americans. This battle was one of Britian's first losses in the South.

    General Henry Clinton and his troops came to Soouth Carolina and trapped American forces in present day Charleston. Charleston happened to be the largest city, so when the British captured it, you could believe this came to be the worst American defeat of the war.

    The Battle of York Town
    British general Cornwallis ser up his base at York town, located in a peninsula in Chesapeake Bay. Washington saw this and sent group of people North because he knew Cornwallis would have spies. So when Cornwallis moved he was cornered in, the French were gaurding the water way, soldiers were coming up from the bottom, and Washington still had soldiers in the North. Cornwallis was forced to surrender. *Yes, this picture was in fact, taken from our "Createing America" Social Studies book.

    American and British Signed the Treaty of Paris
    The treaty ended the Revolutionary War. It had six conditions:
    1. The United States was independent.
    2. It's boundries were the Mississippi River West; Canada North; & Spanish Florida South.
    3. The United States could fish off of Canada's Atlantic Coast; near Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.
    4. Each side would repay debts they owed the other.
    5. The British would return any enslaved persons they had captured.
    6. Congress would recommend that the states return any property they took from Loyalists.
