    The invasion ended the the policy of appeasement of Germany as the Allies finally realized that Hitler would never be satisfied. They had previously allowed him to annex Austria and Czechoslovakia without a response.

    Canada enters the war officially as an ally of The United Kingdom and France. It was the first time in Canadian history that the country declared war as a soverign nation

    The Germans invaded France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands all on the same day and these all became German and Italian occupied regions.

    Germany invades Russia, opening up a second front to fight on. Now they must battle England, France and their allies in the West while they fight Russia in the East. Some see this as the turning point in the war.

    An allied attempt to take the Port of Dieppe from the Germans. Over 6000 mostly Canadian troops participated and almost 60% of those who reached shore were killed, injured or captured. None of the major goals of the mission were accomplished.

    The US drops the atomic bomb.
    The US dropped the first ever atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. The bomb caused an unprecednt amount of devastation and the effects were shocking. Two days later, another bomb was dropped on Nagasaki forcing the Japanese to surrender.

    Japan surrenders, effectively ending World War II. The Japanese maintained a public position of fighting until the end even after Germany was defeated. But the devastation caused by two atomic bombs finally broke their spirit.
