  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    In 1764, the Sugar Act was a new inirect tax, taken by the English Government. The goal was, to decrease the smuggling, what was gooing in the British colonines. The taxes of the Molasses Act got lower, what should have calmed down the settlers. Also, it gave the British soldiers the right, to check ships for smuggled goods, what was really upsetting for the Americans. Especially, because the taxes still favored the British.

    Declaratory Act
    The Declatory Act was another measure for stopping the colonists rebellions. It said, all the passed British laws were now superior to the Americans. The colonists were shocked, many people now realized, it is not favourable, to argue with the king. So the people built two sides, the loyalists and the patriots. The loyalists supported Great Britain and the patriots wanted the American Independence.

    In March 1770 the colonists were dissatisfied with the English Government. The didn't want to pay taxes and though, the king cut their rights. Some colonists started to throw stones, ice and snowballs at twelve soldiers. The soldiers began to fire. Five of the colonists died and some got wounded. Both sides said, it wasn't their fault. Not even the cause was clear, because everyone told a different story. The Boston Massacre was another event, that made the king angry. many cartoons were drawn.

    The Boston Tea Party was an important event in American history. The Tea Act made most of the colonists really upset. They drank really much tea, but did not want to buy the British tea. So some colonists dressed like Indians and hide on a ship. At night the throw all the tea in the water in Pearl Harbour. The water was colored for weeks and the English Government lost about 1 Million Dollars, what made the king really upset. He started to become angry and drew up the Intolerable Acts.

    Intolerable Acts
    The Intolerable or Coercive Acts were laws passed by King George III as a reaction of the Boston Tea Party. He passed five different laws, which took a lot of rights of the colonists. The king was angry. He passed the Quartering Act in 1765, the Boston Port Bill in 1774, the Administration of Justice Act in 1774, the Massachusetts Government Act in 1774 and the Quebec Act in 1774. The colonists became more and more uncertain. Many of them got lots of respect of the king. Others continued revolt.

    Lexington & Concord
    King George III became nervous about all the colonists revolts. He sent 20,000 troops to Concord, but the colonists were prepared. Paul Revere and others invented a spy-network, so they got warned and surprised the British troops. The king wanted to eliminate the rebel leaders with all their weapons. At the end 8 militias died and 11 got wounded.

    After the won Battle of Bunkerhill the king declared the colonies in a state of rebellion. In 1776 Thomas Paine had his speech 'common sense' (it is 'common sense' to rebel). Then John Adams made a plan. He started to organize colonial governments. He pushed for independence and talked to other countries: 'join or step aside'.
