    War between British and China over the trade of Opium.
    Outcome: British defeated the Chinese.

  • Treaty of Nanjing

    Treaty of Nanjing
    It was the first of many unequal treaties. The Emperor of China agreed to pay of the Opium that was destroyed during the Opium war. He also agreed to give the island of Hong Kong to Britain.
    Outcome: Caused other countries to make similar treaties limiting China's power.
  • Taiping Rebellion

    Taiping Rebellion
    A peasant revolt that resulting in more then 20 million deaths.
    Outcome: The start of a long and slow revolution in China.
  • Spheres of Influence

    Spheres of Influence
    Japan expanded into China to join the other countries already influencing the area.
    Outcome: They helped to modernize China.
  • The Boxer Rebellion

    The Boxer Rebellion
    The Chinese who opposed foreigners formed the Fists of Righteous Harmony, or the Boxers. They attacked foreigners, causing countries in the west to send an army to defeat the Boxers.
    Outcome: The Chinese had to allow foreign troops and warships in China.
  • Revolution of 1911

    Revolution of 1911
    After the Qing dynasty collapsed, China became a republic.
    Outcome: For seventeen years, people all over China fought for the right to rule China.

    Japan seized Manchuria, a region of China.
    Outcome: In 1937, Japan bombed Chinese cities and their armies took control of some Chinese regions. Japan was defeated by the Nationalists and Communists in 1945.

    Mao Zedong led communists about 6,000 miles from southern China to a remote area in northwestern Shaanxi. The communist felt that they shouldn't treat the peasants respectivly and fairly.

    Was the largest Asian war and was mainly between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan.
    Outcome: Japan surrendered in 1945

    Outcome: China became a Communist nation.

    The name that was given to the second five year plan. The idea was industrialize China.
    Outcome: China became more modern.

    Proletariat Cultural Revolution-1966
    Karl Marx predicted that the industrial working class would overcome the rulers of China and eliminate social classes.
    Outcome: Mao used Marx%u2019s ideas to carry out a revolution using the poor peasants of China.
  • Four Moderinzations Deng Xiaoping-1978

    Four Moderinzations Deng Xiaoping-1978
    Xiaoping made four goals for China: modernize agriculture, expand industry, develop science and technology, and upgrade China%u2019s defense forces.
    Outcome: The program helped China achieve wealth and power
  • Return of Hong Kong to China-1997

    Return of Hong Kong to China-1997
    Hong Kong, which was previously under British control, was returned to China.
    Outcome: Most people living in Hong Kong were happy for the end of colonial rule, but some were worried about China becoming involved with their economy.
