  • Spheres of Influence

    Western powers carved China into Spheres of Influence. They are areas in which foreign nations have special economic privileges and they gain political influence.
  • The Opium War

    War between the British and China over the trade of opium.
  • The Treaty of Nanjing

    This treaty ended the opium war. The Chinese had to except the British terms of peace. They had to pay for destroyed opium, they had to give Britain Hong Kong, give up control over terms of trade. The Westeners gained the right to extraterritoriality. This is when they could be tried in their own courts instead of chinese courts.
  • Taiping Rebellion

    Lasted for fourteen years. It was a peasant uprising. Twenty million people died. Qing crushed it, weakened the dynasty.
  • Sino-Japanese War

  • Hundred Days of Reform

    Emperor Guang Xi supported this reform. It was laws issued to update civil service exam, organize western-style schools, and promote economic changes. Conservatives opposed this reform. The conservative leader was Ci Xi. Ci Xi seized power to save the traditional confucian order.
  • The Boxer Rebellion

    Anti-Foreign Chinese formed the fists of righteous harmony, or Boxers. They were encouraged by Ci Xi. They attacked and killed Chinese Christians and foreign diplomats.   • Revolution of 1911

    Qing dynasty collapsed after Ci Xi's death. China declared republic. It ended ancient system of imperial rule. Government was disorganized and shaky.
  • Japanese Invasion 1931

    Japan invaded and seized Menchuria. chiang and the communists combined forces to fight the Japanese. America defeted the Japanese in 1945 to end the war.
  • Long March: Chiang Kai Shek

    Led bt Mao to corrupt Chiang's armies in 1934. Walked over 6,000 miles into Northwest China. Of the 90,000 that started, only 7,000 survived.
  • WWII: China vs. Japan 1937

    japan vs. china. second sino-japanese war. Japan occupied most of the coastal China, but the government never officially surrendered. US bombed Japan.
  • Mao Zedong-Communist China 1949

    Communists capturd beijing. Equal power among everyone. became single party dictatorship. Mao died in 1976.
  • Freedom of choice in Marriage

    Law passed making women and men equal. Arranged marriages no longer required.
  • Great Leap Forward

    Program introduced by Mao. Superhuman effort to achieve modernazation. Mao divided china into communes. Commune contained several villages, thousands of acres of land, and around 20,000 people. Commune controlled land and peasant lives. The jobs were assigned. Provided basic needs, medical care, child care, schooling , and recreation. stopped in the 1960's.
  • Great Poletarian Cultural Revolution

    Launched by Mao. Encouraged young to fight capitalist rulers. Students and factory workers formed the red guards. Lots of chaos and death, torture, and prison.
  • Four Modernazations Deng xiaoping

    He was the leader of china. he stressed economic reform. Modernizing agriculture, expanding industry, developing science and technology, and upgrading China's defense forces.
  • Return of Hong Kong to China

    Hao been a reminder of western imperialism in China. Britain made it a center of finance, trade, manufacturing, and shipping. On the return of hong Kong china had to promise to not change its economy for at least 50 years.
