    French and Indian War

    War in which Britain and the Colonists fought the French and the Native Americans. Resulted in many debt problems for the British.
  • Proclamation Act of 1763

    Prohibited settlement of the colonists West of Appalacian Mountains. British wanted control of the population and of the colonists in the fur trade and redirected the population. The colonists ignored the law. It wasn't very effective.
  • Sugar or Revenue Act of 1764

    For money to pay off the French and Indian War. The whole thing was pointless and costly. Provisions were sugar and molasass. It also moved smuggling trials into Canada and British judged with no jury. The colonists protested.

    Colonies could not print their own money. pain in gold and silver

    The First Continental Congress

    56 memebers from12 colonies (not Georgia) met in secret to plan a response to the Intolerable Acts
  • Stamp Act

    Tax on all paper goods. Must have stamp on them. Made smuggling harder. British doings to colonists.
  • Quartering Act

    Colonists had to house the soldiers brought in from Britain
  • Rides of Paul Revere and William Dawes

    "The British are coming! The British are coming." Beginning of the Revolutionary War. Midnight rides to hide and help important people escape before the British could capture them.
  • Lexington and Concord

    "Shot heard round the world." Beginning of the true fighting between the Americans and the British. British retreated.

    Second Continental Congress

    Met because things were going badly in the war. Created and army and a general and discussions continued for a while.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    Americans fought until out of ammo and then retreated, leaving the British suffering heavy losses.
  • Attack on Quebec

    Benedict Arnorld planned an attack in Canada on Quebec which failed but was a brave attempt.
  • Common Sense

    Thomas Paine's pamphlets filled the colonies.
  • British Leave Boston

    The British leave Boston after a humiliating defeat in war.
  • Independence is proposed

    Richard Henry Lee puts forth the idea of independence of the country. It is passed forward.
  • Townshend Acts

    Named for Charles Townshend. Taxes on tea, paper, paints, etc. Eventually all taxes except that on tea were removed from this law.
  • The Boston Massacre

    This event provoked rowdiness amongst the colonists and caused the people in charge to back off a bit. British unloaded fire killing colonists.
  • Tea Act

    3 pence tax, per pound, on tea; put everyone else out of tea business; to keep the East India Trading Company in business
  • Boston Tea Party

    Sons of liberty dressed as Native Americans and poured mass amounts of British Tea into the Boston Harbor in protest to the throne's power.
  • Massachusetts Government Act (Intolerable Act)

    replaced the elected assembly with an appointed one & banned twon meetings
  • Administration of Justice Act (Intolerable Act)

    (Murder Act) moved trials to Canada or Englang for British favor
  • Boston Port Act (Intolerable Act)

    Shut down Boston Ports unless permitted by the crown
  • Declaration of Independence (signed)

    Document that stated that the US was a free country independent of Britain. It was signed on this date by founding fathers, written mostly by Thomas Jefferson and discussed natural rights. It also listed many grievances by the colonists against England.

    Battle of Saratoga

    Turning point of the war. Colonists win because of stupid British. Lead to French Alliance who provided the colonists with much needed supplies.

    Winter at Valley Forge

    Harsh winter at Valley Forge for the Americans who were short on clothes and all sorts of supplies. Battles were fought.
  • Peace of Paris

    Ended war and established Mississippi as West Boundary of the United States. Also recognizes US independence and removes British from country.
  • Massachusetts ratified the Constitution

    John Hancock and Samuel Adams we're unsure until rumor got round that one of them might become VP. Then it was ratified.
  • Virginia Ratified the Constitution

    George Washington wrote a letter to Virgina Assembly convincing them to vote for constitution
  • NY ratified the Constitution

    New York, at first, didn't want to ratify the confederation, but they saw that VA had, so they agreed.

    Thomas Jefferson Presidency

    He was our 3rd president and he ran against Adams, Burr, and Pinckney. He served for 2 terms.
  • Louisiana Purchase Treaty

    Went back and forth between Spain and France until France offers it to the US.
  • Embargo of 1807

    More pro-French because not trading with Britain causes them more harm. (Not trading with French or British)
  • Non-Intercourse Act

    US would trade with anyone except for Britain and France.

    Madison's Presidency

    Madison was the 4th president. Part of Marbury v. Madison. Secretary of State. Father of the Constitution. Wrote federalist terms. Served 2 terms
  • Macon's Bill #2

    Following the Non-Intercourse Act of 1809, this Bill opened the possibility of trade with either France of Britain, depending on who opened trade back up first. Was pro-Britain because it gave them more trade opportunities.
  • Embargo on Britain

    US puts another embargo on Britain in attempt to prevent war.
  • Battle of Tippecannoe

    Tecumseh and his brother (The Prophet) worked to build a confederation of Indians and ended up fighting the US Amry
  • War of 1812

    English declare war on England after years of prevention attempts.
  • Fort Dearborn Massacre

    William Hull was placed in charge of American troops and fort Dearborn was lost.
  • Battle of Lke Eerie

    80% of Oliver Hazard Perry's sailors were killed but the US still won.
  • Battle of the Thames

    Tecumseh was killed and so Indian resistance ended allowing the US to control the north west.
  • Battle of Horseshoe Bend

    Fought in Alabama. Lead by Andrew Jackson and they were fighting the Creek Indians... we won, gaining power over the SW

    New Orleans Fighting

    New Orleans continues fighting because they are so far away from England and they didn't know the war was over with.
