    Tension between Japan and the United States increased in the 1930s. During the 1930s, they begin to talk about starting a war.

    Tensions seriously began to grow after the 1931 Japanese invasion of Manchuria.

    In 1937, an all out war began. It was a military conflict between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan.

    In 1940, following Japan's invasion of French Indochina, the United States halted shipments of airplanes, parts, machine tools. The Japanese took this as an unfriendly act.

    In July of 1941 the United States ceased oil exports to Japan. Part of the reason they ceased oil exports is because of new American restrictions on domestic oil consumption.

    On November 26, 1941 a Japanese task force of 6 aircraft carriers departed northern Japan to a position to northwest of Hawaii. Its intentions were to launch its aircrafts on Pearl Harbor.
