  • Amristar Massacre

    10,000 Indians gathered in a public area in Amristar defying General Dyer's orders. General Dyer ordered his troop to open fire. The Amristar Massacre was a turning point for India's struggle for independence. It deepened distrust of the British.
  • Salt March

    Ghandi led followers on a 200 mile march from his home to the coast protesting the British laws and taxes on salt. The followers broke the law and made salt from the ocean. The protest spread across India and Ghandi was arrested along with approximately 50,000 other Indians. The Salt March increased world support for Indian Nationalists.
  • Quit India Movement

    When World War II began, most Indians had no desire to fight in what they saw as Britain's struggle. The Indian National Congress refused to fight in the war unless Briatin assured immediate Indian independence. The British refused and Ghandi and other Congress members organized the Quit India Movement.
  • Indian Independence

    The British parliament passed the Indian Independence Act. It ended the British rule in India and it divided India into two separate and independent nations. One nation was Hindu-dominated India and the other was Pakistan.
  • Formation of Pakistan

    The formation of Pakistan was a result of the conflict between Muslims and Hindus. The Muslims wanted a separate Muslim nation. They feared their rights wouldn't be respected in a Hindu dominated country.
  • Gandhi's Assassination

    Gandhi was against the violence between the Hindus and Muslims and he held prayer meetings across India. A Hindu extremist, who believed that the Mahatma had betrayed his own people, shot Gandhi. "The light has gone out of our lives. There is darkness everywhere." -Nehru
