  • US capital moved

    the US capital is moved from Philadelphia to washington d.c.
    The Founding Fathers were concerned that if the Nation's Capital was located in one of the original states, that state would wield undue influence over the federal government,
    and have more power than other states. They envisioned a state harassing the federal government and interfering if they did not get their way in national matters. Therefore, they created the District of Columbia (D.C.) and made that the seat of the nation.
  • population increases

    the US population reaches 5.3 million. with only one million of the population being african decent.
  • louisiana purchase

    jefferson buys the louisiana purchse from france by a treaty. more than two million square km was purchased for 15 million dollars part of that was to pay of debts owed by the US to france.
  • war of 1812

    the senate passes a bill delcaring war against great britain
    the war lasted untill 1815. faught mostly on the atlantic ocean, and on the land caost and waterways of north america. one of the reasons the war started was because of immpressement of the US citizens into the royal navy
  • new york

    new york gives free blacks the right to vote.
  • the under ground rail road

    the under gorund railroad was a vast network of people who helped fugitive slaves escape to the north and canada. for the slaves, running away to the north was anything but easy. first they had to escape, and then hide and be sneaky untill they got to the unorth and up to canada.
  • depression begins

    depression begins with the "panic of 1837" andrew jackson issued the specie circular that required that after august 15 1836 that only specie be accepted for the government land sales. the reduction in the money supply braught about a deflation which in turn resulted in the failure of many enterprises.
  • civil war

    the civil war starts with the fire on fort sumter in charleston south carolina. confederates under general pierre beauregard. they opened fire with 50 cannons. two days later fort sumpter is captured. with lots of damage of over 3000 shells. the rebel flag flys over them
