    Ayatollah Khomeini was going against the government because the Shah was interested in land reforming, but some people believed that it was an assult on their religious lands and decided to rebel. They put Khomeini as their leader after fighting the Iranian governement who supported the Shah and he soon took the position as Jurisprudent which is the greatest level of religios and political power.

The hostages that were taken were used as an easy disguse so that Iraq could easily invade Iran while the other countries were busy worrying about the hostages.
