  • The Bloudy Tenent of Persecution

    Cause: The author, Roger Williams wanted to speak out on his beliefs of forced religion.
    Effect: It became a popular book after the English civil war and King Charles 2 ordered a stop to religous persecution in Massachusetts.
  • Half-Way Covenant

    Cause: Conflicts had arose when Puritanism became an established church and there was a requirement of conversion.
    Effect: Children who hadn't experienced conversioln could join as half way members and were onlly left out of communion.
  • Sovreignty and Goodness of God

    Cause: Mary Rowlandson wanted to tell of her captivity by the Indians during King Phillip's War.
    Effect: Opened the way for a number more of "captivity narratives" in the colonial community.
  • Letter on Tolerance

    Cause: John Locke wanted to spread his belief that churches should be voluntary societies.
    Effect: The Toleration Act of 1689 later enforced his beliefs.
  • Enlightenment

    Cause: Intellectuals began to believe that men and womenhad the rights to life, liberty, and property and that the universe was governed by rational laws.
    Effect: Caused a huge decline in relion and more colleges began to be establishe in North America.

    Cause:Catholicss went to a certain regionin New France.
    Effect: The french population rose from 15,000 to 70,000 from 1700 to mid century.
  • Iroquois five nations

    Cause: They did not want to be involved with future conflicts and wanted to be kept out of harms way.
    Effect:They signed a neutrality treaty with France even though they had fought against them in King William's War.

    Cause: tensions between congrgational autonomy and central control that came with establishment of church.
    Effect: gave governance by councils of ministers and elders rather than by congregations, which weakened passion of church members.

    Cause: Reverand Johnathon Edward challanged ratioinalism and gave charismatic sermons to draw people towards religion.
    Effect: A great revival in religion and belief in God swept throughout North America as other reverands began more lively and convincing sermons.
  • Jonathon Edwards

    Cause: he wanted to revive religion after it declined during Enlightenment.
    Effect: succeeded oi reviving religion og colonial North America.
  • Poor Richard's Almanac

    Cause: Benjamin Franklinwanted to spread the word of Enlightenment to ordinary people.
    Effect: This almanac became popular for the traditional literary form in which the story was told.
  • George Whitefield

    Cause: a reverend who was inspired by the sermons of Jonathon Edwards and also wanted to revive religion.
    Effect: attracted people to religion with his charismatic personality and strong sermons

    Cause: Willliam Tennent founded it to train like minded men of the Awakening for the ministry.
    Effect: It was later transformed into Princeton, an elite upper class college.
  • Junipero Serra

    Cause: He was sent by Mexican order to establish missionaries inn Baja, California.
    Effect: led to a colonizing expedition that resulted in many of modern California cities.
  • Indian epidemics

    Cause: Indians were unused to European disease and suffered a large population loss.
    Effect: Indian populatioin north of Mexico went from 7-10 million in 1500 to 1 million in 1800.
