Dwight Eisenhower was the 34th president of the United States. He ran for President in 1952 and was a republican. He was a general and war hero before his presidencey. He pledged that he would personally go to Korea to end the war if elected. Keeping his promise, after elected he took a three day trip to Korea on December of 1952. His achievements include signing an aristice with Korea and forming NASA. -

The official ruling was that segregation in public schools was "inherently unequal" and unconstitutional. It revised the earlier declaration of Plessy vs. Ferguson in 1896 which stated that "seperate but equal" was constitutional. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott

In December of 1955, Rosa Parks refused to move to the back of the bus. The bus driver then acted as a police officer and arrested her. Her charge was violating the cities Jim Crow statues. This took place in Montgomery, Alabama. Following this event, a yearlong black boycott of the city buses began. The boycott ended with the Supreme Court ruling that segregation on public buses is unconstitutional. -

This act called for over fourty thousand miles of highway so people would have to take unsafe or inefficient roads. The program took about ten years to complete with a total that costs more than all the New Deal programs combined. -
Suez Crisis

President Nasser of Egypt was seeking funds to build a dam on the upper Nile. America and Britain offered their financial support but Secretary of State Dulles withdrew offer when Nasser began "flirting" with communism. Nasser's action threatened western Europes oil supply. On February 1, 1960, four blsck college students started a "sit-in" at Woolworth's lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina. They sat at a "white's only" counter and stayed there all day while people poured food on them and called them names. Some peopke even got beaten up. They returned everyday with more students and by the end of the week they had about a thousand students. These students formed the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. -

The Bay of Pigs Invasion happened under Kennedy. The purpose of the Bay of Pigs was to overthrow Cuban leader Fidel Castro. The US trained Cuban revolutionaries and promised air support but ended up backing out. The invasion happened on April 17, 1961. The Bay of Pigs invasion failed miserably. -

On August 28th, 1963, about 250,000 people came to march with about 60,000 of them being white. Speeches were being held in front of the Lincoln memorial that included SNCC's John Lewis and A. Philiph Randolph. Martin Luther King Jr. said his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. -

The Cuban Missile Crisis happened under Kennedy's administration. The Soviet leader at the time was Khrushchev. The Soviets were concerned about the US placement of missiles in Turkey, so as a response, they placed some missiles in Cuba. On August 29, 1963, U-2 spy planes detected the SAMs (surface to air missiles). The Soviets said that the US attack on Cuba would mean war. Eventually, both US and the Soviets took there missiles out. -

On an early Sunday morning, a bomb when off at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham. This church was primarily a black church. Four young girls died with many others injured. -

The War on Poverty is what president Johnson declares. The Office of Economic Opportunity had it's budget doubled which allowed them to send finicial ad to thouse who needed it. Money was given to the students instead of the schools. Medicare was given to the elderly. -
Civil Rights Act

On July 2, 1964, President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act or 1964. This act provided for the desegregation of parks, schools, swimming pools and other public places. It also reduced having people take literacy tests in order to vote. -

The Gulf of Tonkin was when two American warships were attacked by the north Vietnamese. In response to this, the Tonkin Gulf Resolution was formed. This was passed by Congress which gave the president a blan check for return action. -
Malcolm X Assassination

Malcolm X died at a speaking event in Manhattan. Three people ran on stage and shot him 15 times. He was prounced dead at the New York Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. He died at age 39. -
Operation Rolling Thunder

Operation Rolling Thunder was when the US started bombing the North Vietnamese. The operation was given government approval on February 24, 1965. The first day of bombing was March 2, 1965. They attacked the ammunition base at Xom Bang. This lasted until October of 1968. The purpose of the operation was to demoralise the North Vietnamese people and to undermine their government. It failed. -

President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act in 1965. It abolished literacy tests amd poll taxes for African Americans. Purpose was to not single anyone out and to allow everyone to vote. -

The Tet Offensive was a series of suprise attacks by the Vietcong and north Vietnamese forces. They attacked cities and towns throughout South Vietnam. The attacks began on January 31, 1968. It took weeks for the US and South Vietnamese to gain back contol over the cities. This showed that the war was far from over. -

Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4th, 1968. He was pronounced dead about an hour after he got shot at St. Joseph Hospital. His assassinator was James Earl Ray. -

Vietnamization was a term used under Nixon's presidencey. This strategy was used to end US involvement in the Vietnam war. In order to achieve this goal, the US would be transferring all military responsibilities to South Vietnam. They built up south Vietnam fources in order to slowly withdraw American troops. The Vietnamization process was considered complete in 1973. -

He became the president after Nixon resigned after the Watergate scandal.Ford fully pardoned Nixon and his first goal as president was to curb inflation.
