    Eisenhower Enters Office
    Eisenhower entered office as the 34th President of the United States. He was a 5 star general in World War II for the US Army. He attempted to end the Korean War.

    Eisenhower Signs Armistice with North Korea
    An Armistice was signed on July 27th to get together a group of representetives from neutral countries to decide what to do with thousands of prisoners of war from both North and South Korea. This armistice created a new bored between North and South Korea.

  • Brown Vs. Board of Education

    Brown Vs. Board of Education
    In the Brown Vs. Board of Education of Topeka court case, the supreme court unanimously ruled that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal." This ruling overturned 1896 case Plessy Vs. Ferguson, that seprate but equal facilities were constitutional. It also was a basis for the 1960's civil rights movement.

  • The Geneva Conference 1955

    The Geneva Conference 1955
    Eisenhower met with the leaders of Great Britain, France, and the USSR to discuss the future of Germany and arms control. Eisenhower presented his "Open Skies" plan, which allowed open surveilence of eachothers military bases to make sure each country was following the agreement of arms control.

  • Rosa Parks Bus Boycot

    Rosa Parks Bus Boycot
    After work one day, Rosa Parks, a black woman, was sitting in the middle section of a bus, when a white man came up to her and told her to move to the back. She refused, the police were called, and she was jailed. This led Martin Luther King Jr. to lead the Montgomery Bus Boycot, which lasted a year and eventually led to integrated buses in Montgomery.

  • MLK Forms SCLC

    MLK Forms SCLC
    Martin Luther King Jr. created the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) to coordinate local protest groups for civil rights in the south. The Montgomery Bus Boycot inspired King to create this group.

  • The Little Rock Nine

    The Little Rock Nine
    On September 4th, 1957, nine black students tried to go to school at Little Rock High School in Arkansas. The Governer of Arkansas brought in police to stop them from entering the all white school. President Eisenhower then brought in the National Guard the next day to escort them into the school.

  • Greenboro Sit-Ins of 1960

    Greenboro Sit-Ins of 1960
    On February 1st, 1960, four Black college students went to an all white restaurant. The restaurant served colored, but didn't allow them to sit in the restaurant. They were refused service and asked to leave. The next day, 24 students sat'in at the restaurant, to protest the unequal treatment of African Americans. Within the next couple days, the restaurant was so overwhelmed that it had to close.

  • SNCC is formed

    SNCC is formed
    Teenagers who became leaders of the famous "sit-ins" created the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in April of 1960. The students had no affiliation with MLK, and created their own projects to fight for civil rights.SNCC and SCLC worked side by side to gain equal rights.

    Kennedy Enters Office as 35th President
    Kennedy was in the US Navy and fought in World War II. In his innagural adress, he said "Ask not what your country can do for you--ask what you can do for your country." He believed and took actions for equal civil rights.

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    In October of 1962, U2 spy planes discovered that the USSR was transporting and building missile sites in Cuba. He decided to block off Cuba to prevent the USSR from bringing more supplies to Cuba. There was a fear of nuclear war. The Soviets eventually removed their missiles from Cuba.

    Lyndon B. Johnson Enters Office as the 36th President
    LBJ was Kennedy's Vice President, He became President when JFK was assasinated on November 22, !963. He was reelected for a second term. He started the Great Society Program.

    Kennedy Assassination
    As Kennedy was on a tour through Texas as part of his campaign, he was shot in the head while sitting in the back of his convertable. Lee Harvey Oswald allegedly shot JFK from a building near the road he was on. JFK was pronounced dead at 1:00 PM.

    LBJ's Great Society
    Johnson created a Great Society program that wa suppored to be a "war on poverty." It was also used to decrease the amount of racial injustice in America. This led to the creation of Medicare, which provides senior citizens with health insurance.

    The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was an act that made racial, religious, ethnic, or gender discrimination illigal. The act ended racial segregation in schools.

  • USS Maddox Attacked

    USS Maddox Attacked
    The USS maddox was attacked by Vietnamese PT boats in the Gulf of Tonkin on August 2nd, 1964. The USS Maddox was enggaged by 3 torpedos that didn't make contact. The soldiers on the Maddox fought off the Vietnamese boats.

  • Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

    Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
    After the alleged attack on the USS Maddox, the President was allowed to go to any means neccesary to prevent further war action in Vietnam. This was the only congressional action, besides military funding, that ever happened in the Vietnam war to authorize US actions.

    Election of 1964
    The Election of 1964 happened less than a year after Kennedys assassination. Democratic President LBJ was going against Republican Candidate Barry Goldwater. LBJ won in one of the biggest landslides in US history.

    First US Troops in Vietnam
    On this day, an air defense missile battalion was deployed to Da Nang. LBJ did this to provide protection to key US airbases in Vietnam. This was the first commitment of US troops in Vietnam.

    Voting Rights Act of 1965
    The Voting Rights Act of 1965 made discriminatory voting practices illegal. This outlawed tests which tested voter eligibility and the literacy of voters. This expanded voting rights for non-English speaking Americans.

    Executive Order 11246
    President Lyndon B. Johnson signed an Executive order in September of 1965 that required hiring and employment to be non-discriminatory. This meant that they couldn't be judged on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

    The Tet Offensive
    On January 30th, 1000 Viet Cong troops infiltrated the city of Saigon. During this time, many surprise attacks were taking place in South Vietnam, when, in fact, no attacks were supposed to be happening. Although there was a 2 day cease-fire agreement, the Communists attacked. This made the US believe that we needed to change our war strategy in the Vietnam War.

    The Assassination of MLK
    On April 4th, on the balcony of a hotel in Memphis Tennessee, Martin Luther King Jr. was shot in the face and neck by James Earl Ray, an escaped convict. He was pronounced dead an hour later.

    Richard Nixon enters office as the 37th President
    nixon served in World War II in the navy as a Navy lieutenent commander. He was Eisenhower's vice president. As president, he lowered the tension between the USSR and China. Geraldo Ford was his vice president. Ford became when Nixon resigned in 1974.

    The Watergate Scandal
    On June 17th, 1972, burglers working for President Nixon broke into the Democratic Party's National Committee office and took pictures and placed eavesdropping devices in the offices. A worker discovered duct tape on a lock on a door in the office and called the police. Nixon claimed he knew nothing of this, but was not believed. This was a huge scandal.

  • Paris Peace Accords

    Paris Peace Accords
    On January 27th, 1973, President Ford met with leaders from North Vietnam, South Vietnam, and the Viet Cong to sign an agreement that would end the war in Vietnam and create peace. This included a cease fire, a dismantling of military bases, and a withdrawal of US troops. The North Vietnam army would also release all US POWs.

    US Withdraws Completely from Vietnam
    Two months after signing the Vietnam Peace agreement, the US completely withdrew from Vietnam. As US troops left South Vietnam, Hanoi realesed all of the prisoners of war, some of which were there for 8 years. Finally, after a peace agreement in Paris, the United States was completely out of Vietnam.

    The Resignation of Nixon
    Because of the Watergate Scandal, Nixon was ordered by court to bring tapes of his White House meetings to be evaluated to see if he knew anything about the Watergate Burgluries. It soon became extremely probable that Nixon knew about Watergate, and there were calls from all over the country for him to resigned. He resigned on August 8th 1974.

    As Nixon's vice president, he became President after Nixon resigned. He was president during one of the worst economic periods since the great depression. He had a huge background check before he became president after Nixon's watergate scandal.

    Ford Pardoning Nixon
    In a very contreversial speach, President Ford pardoned Former President Nixon for any crimes he knew about or committed while in office. Ford said that he did this to end the divisions created by the Watergate Scandal. It was just to end the contreversy and arguments about the scandal and move on.
