Social Institutions-Family: I was born
When I was born on April 29, 1992, my family, comprised of my mother, father and two older sisters began to influence my norms, values and attitudes. Through instilling these, my family had helped me become a part of society. -
Social Institution-Religion: Began going to church
Through the threat of God's power and Hell, religion is capable of instilling norms and values, or socializing those within the church. That which is unallowed and unacceptable in the religion becomes the members norms (not drinking for example). -
MIddle Class: Growing Up
Growing up, I was part of a middle class family, one whose parents had white collar jobs and earned money by working. -
Social Institution-School: First Day of School
In August of 1997 I attended my first day of school at Westridge Elementery. Here, I participated in another level of socialization. I learned behaviors and skills that taught me generally how to act around adults other than my parents and children other than my siblings. -
Social Ranking: Pokemon Card Collections
It was during my second grade year when I first became aware of social ranking. During this time, status had been evaluated upon Pokemon card collections- what we as second graders had valued and considered important. -
Social Control: First Holy Communion
In June of the year 2000 I made my First Holy Communion. Religeon and the church in general encourage conformity to their respective norms: the followers of a church are all encouraged to dress and act similarly, in a way which is appropriet to God. -
Freud-Id: Got My Own Room
When my oldest sister moved away to college, I moved into my own room. Here, I have been able to express myself, and satisfy my basic urges, needs and desires. -
Instincts: First Haunted House
When I went to my first haunted house in 2002, I was natrually impelled to scream when something popped out from behind a corner. This was an almost involentary action. -
Conformity: Babysitting
When I turned twelve years old, I was legally able to babysit. Rather than becoming annoyed with the children's immaturity, I too began to act younger. My attitudes, beleifs and behaviors were influenced and altered by the children. an individuals attitudes, beleifs and behaviors are influenced by others. -
Cultural Universals: First Kiss
In 2004 I had my first kiss. Giving hugs and kisses are patterns that are common among all human cultures world wide. -
Social Isolation: Homework
At the start of middle school I began having an obsession over education and homework, usually working on school work from the time I got home until the time in which I went to bed. Though not being completely socially isolated like the Genie we have studied in class, I was receiving less social interaction than what was normal or expected for one of my age. -
Status Conflicts: I Turned Thirteen
When I began my teen years, my parents and I began an eternal struggle over dominence. Both of us were persistant on the "fact" that we knew everything and what was best for the other. I wanted to be in control but they were not yet willing to let go or allow it. -
Status Symbols: Designer Purses in High School
When I started HIgh School, It seemed as though Gucci, Coach and other $500 dollar purses were every where. These purses were external denotations of their families status. -
Milgram Experiment: Check Payment at Work
When I began my job at Encore School of the Arts in 2007, one of my tasks was to make sure that customers' balances were paid on time. Though I was unaware of the customers' financial situations, I continued to call their homes and deny them lessons if payments were past due soley due to the reason that my boss had requested that I do so. -
Personality: Looking for a Job
After Encore School of the Arts, where I had previously worked shut down, I was forced to look for a new job though following up on applications and returning calls for interviews was difficult for me due to the attributes which characterize myslef, or my personality. -
Social Institutions-Government: Driving Laws
By making and enforcing rules, the government is able to socialize its subjects, forcing norms and values upon them. When I received my license at the age of sixteen, a law had been passed allowing only family members to ride in the car within the first six months. Due to fear of being caught and punished, it bacame a norm that only family members ride in the car of a person who had just received their licence. -
Crime: Driving Sofia to School
The day after I had received my license I drove my friend Sofia to school though it was banned by colorado law. -
Social Interactions: Coaching Soccer
This spring season I began coaching a soccer team of third graders. My behavior and existance was there to affect the children and thus, social interaction took place. -
Deviance: Sociology Deviance Project
In April of 2009 Sofia and I began our deviance project for Sociology in which we shopped at stores including King Soopers, Wal-Mart, Hat World and American Eagle, buying our murchandise all in pennies. Though we did not commit a crime, we were involved in an act varying greatly from the norms in our society. -
Taboo: Cursing
I yelled at one of the third graders on the soccer team I coach for cursing when she missed a shot on goal. I was angry due to the fact that such terms have been banned due to social customs. -
Freud-Superego: Job Interview
When I interviewed for Panache Catering, I attempted to act completely professional, supressing the urges of my id and rather, acting more morally and how I thought they would prefer me to act.
