  • The Stamp Act

    Imposed tax on all American colonists.The tax was collected to be used in protecting the American frontier.
  • Townshend Acts

    Series of laws by the British government on the American colonies. It required new taxes on imports of paper, paint, lead, glass, and tea. It took away some freedom of the colonists.
  • Boston Tea Party

    This was an act of defiance to British rule over the colonists. American colonists were frustrated at Britain for imposing tax without representation. Therefore dumping 342 chests of tea, which were imported by the British East India Company.
  • Declaration of Independence

    The first formal statement by the nation, where people can assert their right to choose their own government. This document was approved by the Continental Congress.
  • First U.S. States

    13 states were recognized as part of the first U.S.
    They were: Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina and Rhode Island.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    This Act was passed as a federal law which allowed for the capturing and returning the slaves who ran away within the territory of the U.S.
