  • The Cotton Gin

    American inventor, Eli Whitney introduced the cotton gin. The cotton gin was used to make cotton faster and more efficiently, otherwise hands were used to make cotton. The machine separated the seeds from the fiber muych easier than people could. The cotton gin benefited the South with the increase production of cotto withbigger production came slaves to labor in big plantations.
  • "Clinton's Ditch": Erie Canal

    The Erie canal was America's first major transportation system until the railroad. New York Governor Dewitt Clinton launched the construction of the Erie canal in 1817. The canal was to connect Lake Erie and rest of the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Coast. Soon enough, New York became a huge portfor the U.S. The canal allowed an easy access to the West causing the first westward movement.
  • "What Hath God Wrought?" -First telegraph message sent

    Samuel F.B. Morse introduced the telegraph system. The telegraph helped broaden communication between the coasts. The telegraph used a set of dots and blots now called morse code to send out its messsages.
  • Civil War begins

    War between the North and South over the issue of slavery.
  • Transcontinental Railroad

    Introduced to the public in 1869 , the Transcontinental railroad paved the way for future railroads to be made. The transcontinental railroad connected the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. Also connecting the newly aquired West inot the Republic. It provided a faster and safer way of to transport goods and people.
  • The Standard Oil Company

    The Standard Oil company was founded by John D. Rockefeller located in Ohio. The company porduced, transported, and refined oil. Rockefeller was known squashed the smaller businesses by using cheating, unlawful tactics to get ahead of the game which in turn made him one of the most richest men in modern history.
  • First Telephone

    There have been many disputes in who really perfected the modern day telephone, but Alexander Graham Bell takes the credit. The first words to have said that come out of the telephone was, "Watson, come here. I want you." The telephone was able to expand comapnies and used in daily lives by the dawn of the 20th century. The telephone created its own industry as well as helping globalizing and keeping better comminucation.
  • Compromise of 1877

    Issued by President Rutherford B. Hayes. The compromise formally proclaimed the end of reconstruction by withdrwaing soldiers from the South, no longer providing protection to the now freedmen.
  • A Bright Idea- The Light Bulb

    Thomas and fellow inventors helped patent the incandescnet light bulb. There have been previous attempts use an electric light bulb by scientists before Edison. The light bulb is now a common convenience in American homes.
  • Ford's Model T

    Henry Ford introduced to the Americans, the first Ford Model T. The model T was easily accesible to middle class families at a modest price. Ford innovated the mass assembly line using interchangeable parts to create the automobile.This technique is often used in mass production. From 1908 to 1927, Ford produced more than 15 million model T's.
