    A russian satellite that was launched into space. It was the first of a series of satellites that would be launched into space, it was called the Sputnik Program. When the americans found out about the satellites, they began to worry. They did not want to fall behind in the space race.

  • The Bulletin Board is Created

    Ward Christensen and Randy Seuss are the founders for the CBBS bulletin board. It was the first bulletin board system ever to go online.
  • NFSNET

    The NFSNET replaces the ARPANET. This new system was a faster model of the ARPANET. It was the backbone infrastructure for the public internet users.
  • LAN and Dial-Up

    LAN is short for Local Area Network, and it was first developed in 1980. LAN connects computers in a limited area. Dial Up is a form of internet access that uses the public switched telephone network. It establishes internet access through the telephone lines.
  • CSNET

    CSNET was a computer network that linked computer science classes at schools in the US that were not linked to the ARPANET. Larry Landweber created the first CSNET proposal. By 1981, the University of Delaware, Princeton University, and Purdue University was connected to CSNET.
