Big Bang Theory Timeline

  • Georges Lemaitre

    Georges Lemaitre
Georges Lemaitre was a Belgian astronomer that lived from 1894-1966. He had an idea that once in the not too distant past, every piece of matter in the universe was concentrated. When a "primeval atom" blew up, the universe started.
  • Edwin Hubble

    Edwin Hubble
Edwin Hubble formed Hubbles Law in this year. HIs law helped astronomers determine the age of the universe and proved that the universe is expanding. While Hubble was devising a classification system for the different galaxies he studied and sorted into groups, he noticed redshifts in the emission of light from the galaxies, seeing that they were moving away from each other at a rate constant to the distance between them. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/Hubb
  • George Gamow

    George Gamow
Gamow was a Russian-born theoretical physicist and cosmologist who lived from 1904 –1968. He and one of his students wrote a very important paper that explained some of the reactions that could explain the "big bang theory". It explains how present levels of hydrogen and helium in the universe could be explained by reactions that occurred during the "big bang".This gave theoretical support to the Big Bang theory, but it didn't explain the existance of elements heavier than helium.
  • Fred Hoyle

    Fred Hoyle
Fred Hoyle 1915 – 2001 was an English astronomer and mathematician who is know for his rejection of the big bang theory. He named it the "Big Bang Thory". Hoyle agreed that the universe was expanding, but didnt agree with Lemaître's interpretation of it. Instead, Hoyle,Thomas Gold and Hermann Bondisaid that the universe was in a steady state. The theory tried to explain how the universe could be eternal and essentially unchanging while still having the galaxies we see moveaway from oneanother.

    sloan digital sky survey
In 1963 two scientists in New Jersey were working on a satellite for measureing microwaves. When they tested the satellite they found strange microwaves coming from all directions. First, they thought the antenna wasn't working. But after rechecking, they realized that they had discovered something, radiation predicted earlier. The radiation, called the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation, convinced most astronomers that the BBT was correct. For discovering the CMBR they got the nobel prize.
  • COsmic Background Explorer (COBE)

    COsmic Background Explorer (COBE)
COBE, a.k.a Explorer 66, was a satellite for cosmology, madeto investigate the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) of the universe and give measurements that would help us understand cosmos.
  • Brookhaven Lab

    Brookhaven Lab
The Brookhaven Lab created a very futuristic device. It was designed to recreate something that could have been there for a short period of time during the Big Bang. People at the Brookhaven Lab think the big bang happened 15 billion years ago.

A far-infrared balloon borne spectrometer is used for three flights in the mid-1970 to test the Big Bang theory. To increase its sensitivity, the instrument is cooled to one degree above absolute zero by immersing it in a cryostat cooled with superfluid helium. This is the first time that such a low temperature is used for infrared observations. The observations provide the most widely accepted support for the Big Bang theory until the launch of the COBE satellite in 1989.
  • The TV show

    The TV show
The Big Bang Theory is an American sitcom created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, both of whom serve as executive producers on the show, along with Lee Aronsohn, who is also one of the head writers. It premiered on CBS on September 24, 2007. This shows how science is used in everyday life. Tv show take a concept and make a sitcom off of it.
