Start of Prohibition
It was instituted as an effort to save grain when the U.S. entered WW1. The enforcement of the amendment was difficult. This led to bootlegging and illegal drinking areas. Prohibition is important because it marked a time of rebellion for United States people, and led to the 21st amendment which repealed the 18th, ending the era. Prohibition is also significant because bootleggers from this era eventually ended up starting a stock car racing league, known today as Nascar. -
Woman suffrage
The 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was passed on June 4th 1919, and was ratified on August 26th 1920. This granted all American women the right to vote. Women fought for their rights for many years before any progress was made. Congress passing this amendment marked a huge moment in World history and put people on a somewhat level playing field. I say "somewhat" because not all people were treated equally, especially in these times of discrimination and eventually genocide. -

Discovery of Penicillin
Penicillin was the world's first antibiotic. It was discovered by Alexander Fleming. The discovery opened the door for modern medicine and allowed for effective treatment for certain common infections like pneumonia and gonorrhea. Though Fleming could not purify and isolate the active ingredient in his "mold juice" in his labs, he gets the credit for discovering the revolutionary antibiotic. It was penicillin that saved many lives during World War 2. -
The Stock Market Crash
Also known as Black Tuesday, it is regarded as the start of the Great Depression. Still to this day, it is regarded as the longest and most severe depression in the history of the industrialized world. The Great Depression changed the way millions of people lived. People lost their jobs, homes, money, and more when the stock market crashed. That is why I think that Black Tuesday is significant in world history. It was not until World War 2 started, that the U.S. could begin rebounding. -

Franklin D. Roosevelt wins Presidential Election
FDR was the only president to be elected four times. Roosevelt led the U.S. through the Great Depression and World War II. He greatly expanded the powers of the federal government. Because FDR was elected in his first presidential election, he was able to come in as a leader of a country amidst its struggle with a crippled economy and begin a legacy as a powerful and very influential president. He gained the trust of the American people and gave the country direction. -
The First Concentration Camp Established
The first concentration camp was the Dachau camp. Initially, the camp held "political prisoners". Those being people that opposed the Nazi Regime. Over time, other groups were introduced including homosexuals,Jehovah's Witnesses, and Jews. Later, the labor of the prisoners was used to expand the camp. Though it was not the deadliest camp, it was the first established under the Nazi Regime which is arguably the biggest event in the 20th century. Dachau shaped and started the Holocaust. -
