    Allies began using convoys and sonar system to protect ships. The Germans were successful in the beginning, but by mid 1943, allies had upper hand

    Prior to this battle, the Japanese won every battle and took over the Pacific. USA and Australia stopped Japan from invading and the US began to use the Island Hopping technique to weaken Japan's forces.

    Germans violated non-aggression pact with Soviet Union and attacked. Soviets lost 1,100,000 million people and began to move westward towards Germany.
  • Normandy Invasion (D-Day)

    Longest land-sea air operation in history. Soviet was pushing into Poland and Allies were pushing north to Italy. By the end of the Normandy Campaign, nearly 425,000 Allied and German troops were killed, wounded, or missing.

    Fought in Belgium and 120 American GI’s captured and mowed down by SS machine guns and pistols. One of the most extensive war of US military. Americans won by close to losing.

    Truman (Churchill and Clement Atlee) and Stalin met in Potsdam, Germany. They drew up a blueprint to disarm Germany and eliminate Nazi regime. Japan had to unconditionally surrender.

    Over 23 nations tried Nazi war criminals in Nuremberg, Germany. 12/23 defendants were sentenced to death.

    Took place before WWII was over. Roosevelt, Stalin and churchill met in Yalta in the Soviet Union to discuss post WWII. Set up United Nations
  • Iwo Jima

    27,000 Japanese held Iwo Jima and lost 26,800 Japanese troops. US won but lost 6000 marines.
  • Battle of Okinawa

    Japan's last defensive stronghold. They used 1900 Kamikaze attacks and lost 110,000 Japanese troops. The US won.
  • President Franklin D. Roosevelt passes away and the US went through a major grieving period. Harry S. Truman takes over as president.

    Means “Victory in Europe” day. General Eisenhower accepted a surrender by the Third Reich. 1st part of war was over.

    Hiroshima turned the whole city to dust in 43 seconds.
