    Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights leader who became the most visible spokesperson during this movement. His most famous and well known speech was, "I Have a Dream." Sadly, he was assassinated on April 4, 1968.

    In the 1950s, entertainment became a huge thing, and Elvis Presley became the King of Rock. He was very popular and is known for moving his hips.

    After WW2, people were ready for peace and prosperity. Business during this time boomed, families expanded, people bought houses, and interstates were built. People born during this period are referred to as "Baby boomers."

    The Cold War was rivalry, tension, and fighting that took place after World War 2 and lasted 44 years. The Soviet Union and the U.S. competed for influence around the world, but never actually fought each other directly.

    Berlin Blockade/Berlin Airlift

    Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union, blocked off Berlin. He blocked off water, rail, and road access so the United States, France, and Britain couldn't transport goods. As a result, they responded by flying in food, fuel, and supplies instead.

    Rosa Parks
    Rosa Parks is famous for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white man. This event took place in Montgomery, Alabama, and helped to start the Civil Rights Movement.

    The Warsaw Pact was the Communist's response to NATO. It was their own team and an alliance formed between the Soviet Union and several Eastern European countries. This pact was signed in Warsaw, Poland.

    The Vietnam War was a very expensive war that lasted a long time. The fight between North and South Vietnam lasted nearly 20 years. The United States were allies with South Vietnam.

    The Berlin Wall was a physical wall made of concrete built in 1961. It was put up to literally divide Berlin into East and West Berlin. The wall was demolished in 1989.

    The Cuban Missile Crisis was a 13 day confrontation between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. This fight was direct and very dangerous because it was the closest these two countries came to nuclear conflict.
  • Robert F. Kennedy Assassination

    Robert F. Kennedy Assassination
    Robert F. Kennedy, Presidential candidate at the time, was assassinated on June 5, 1968. He was 42 when he was assassinated at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. Before he was assassinated, he was Attorney General during his brother, JFK's, administration. He also worked for African American Civil Rights.

    Watergate
    Several people were arrested in the Democratic Nation Convention HQ at the Watergate Hotel in D.C. They were there spying and snooping on the Democrats strategy for the 1972 election. Nixon and his team attempted to cover it up and denied being involved. Nixon then resigned.

    Gerald Ford became the 38th President of the United States in August 1974 when Richard Nixon resigned. He was a Republican President and was President until January 1977. He was a likable and friendly guy.

    Ronald Reagan is the 40th President of the United States, whose term ran from January 20, 1981 to January 20, 1989. He is known for "Reganomics," which is when he lowered the tax rates, deregulated the economy, and had a tighter control of money supply. He survived an assassination attempt in 1981.

    Challenger Explosion
    The NASA shutter orbiter mission and Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart during its flight. It took 73 seconds for the Challenger to break and explode, and all seven of the passengers died.

    The Persian Gulf War was when Iraq invaded Kuwait because they felt excluded and slighted because of oil deals among the other Arab states. The U.S. defended Kuwait and Iraq was driven out of Kuwait and defeated quickly. However, Saddam Hussein was left in power in Iraq.

    Bill Clinton was a Democrat who was elected President in 1993. He oversaw the longest peacetime economic expansion out of every president. He also signed NAFTA, passed a welfare reform, and increased children's health insurance before he was impeached for having an affair.

    September 11, 2001
    On September 11, 2001, Islamic terrorists from the group Al-Qaeda attacked the U.S. They attacked the U.S. by hijacking and flying two planes into the Twin Towers, flying the other one into the Pentagon, and one crashed into a field, but was believed to be headed to the Capitol. A total of 2,996 people died because of these attacks.

    Hurricane Katrina vs. Hurricane Harvey

    Hurricane Katrina: Hurricane Katrina was very deadly and destructive, and was a category 5 hurricane, which is the highest category. This hurricane caused a lot of damage at the Gulf Coast, especially New Orleans. It caused 1833 fatalities.
    Hurricane Harvey: This hurricane goes along with Hurricane Katrina in being one of the worst hurricanes on record. This hurricane caused a lot of damage as well.
