    D-Day was when about 156,000 Allied forces landed on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of a heavily fortified coast on the Normandy region. The invasion was one of the largest sea military assaults in history and required extensive planning.

    The Germans launched a large attack in the Battle of the Bulge. They lost to the Allies pretty much sealing the fate of the German army.

    Following an elaborate planned air and naval bombardment, three U.S. marine divisions landed on the island. Iwo Jima was defended by about 23,000 Japanese army and navy troops, who fought from caves, dugouts, tunnels and underground installations. The marines wiped out the defending forces after a month of fighting.

    The United States drops the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. The city is devastated.

    Nagasaki.
    Another atomic bomb is dropped on Nagasaki, Japan resulting finally in Japan’s unconditional surrender.

    Japan surrenders to US and the Allies. The Japanese navy and air force were destroyed. The Allied naval blockade of Japan and intensive bombing of Japanese cities had left the country and its economy devastated.
