    Assassination of Franz Ferdinand
    Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated when they were in Sarajevo, Bosnia. He was next in line for the throne of Austro-Hungary. The killing of Archduke Franz Ferdinand set off tensions in Europe and started World War I.

    First use of gas as a weapon by the Germans
    The Germans use gas as a weapon which killed lots of people. People had to wear gas masks because of the gas in the air. This is the first time gas was used in a war. Gas masks even had to be used on animals!
  • Sinking of the Lusitania

    Sinking of the Lusitania
    The Lusitania was a British passenger liner. More than 1,000 people died and 128 were American citizens. The ship was torpedoed by a German U-boat.

    Zimmermann Note
    Arthur Zimmermann sent a telegram that was bound for Mexico offering a German alliance with them if Americans entered the war. This note made the Americans angry. More Americans were not in favor for Germany after this note was sent.

    President Wilson asked Congress to go declare war on Germany. Women also enlisted in the armed forces for noncombat jobs like radio operators, clerks, and nurses. The Americans made a very important and quick impact on the war. When lots of troops came onto the battlefield they made a big difference.

    The World War starts to come to an end when other countries start to have cities or smaller towns wanting independence and to have a separate power than the place that they are in. The countries had to focus more on this than the war so they decided to "drop out." This caused Germany to lack power and they did not have much of an option to keep fighting. Germany was forced to give up.

    This treaty made Germany accept full responsibility for the conflict, Germany had to pay the Allies billions of dollars, disarm completely, and give up its overseas colonies and some territory in Europe.

    The League of Nations was created by President Wilson and was the final point of the Fourteen Points. League members would preserve peace and prevent future wars. They would respect and protect one another's independence.
