    Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated while visiting Sarajevo, Bosnia. He was next in line for the Austro- Hungarian throne. The assassination set off decades-old tension in Europe and started WWI.

    The Sussex was a French ship, that a German U-Boat attacked. Their attack injured many Americans and made americans angry. To help soothe the US so they don't enter the war, they created the Sussex Pledge.The sussex pledge offered money to the wounded americans. The pledge was supposed to help and resolve the conflict over the submarine warfare. Submarine warfare had always angered the US because we were not in the war but we still got attacked. This was one of the reasons we entered the war.

    The USA'S cruise ship went from New York to Liverpool, England. More than 1,900 people were on the ship when the Germans U-Boat torpedoed it. More than 1,100 perished and 125 were Americans. This angered the Americans because they were not involved in the war and the Germans still torpedoed their ship. This ending up being one of the reasons America entered the war.

    The Zimmer Note was a intercepted secret telegram sent from Germany meant to go to New Mexico. It stated that if the USA entered the war, that Mexico and Germany would pair together and both attack the US. The note set off a new wave of anti- Germany feelings in the US. It also became on of the reasons the US entered the war.

    When the USA entered the war and joined the Allies during April 6, 1917. The USA took Russia's place after Russia dropped out of the war. They also supplied food and stronger troops. Not only that but they helped the Allies get ahead of the Germans U-Boats by supplying convoys.

    In 1918, the Ottoman Empire was on the the brink of collapsing.Austria- Hungary was breaking apart. In October Poland, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia declared independence. On top of that they were still fighting in WWI. By November, the Ottoman Empire surrendered to the Allied Powers.

    The Treaty of Versailles was a peace treaty after WWI. It made Germany pay billions of dollars to the Allies. It also carved up the Austro- Hungarian and Russian Empires. It restored old nations and created new ones. It also included the Leagues of Nations.

    The League of Nations was created by Wilson. It was members of the League would preserve peace and prevent future wars. It was supposed to protect and respect other countries independence. On March 1920 Senate rejected the treaty and League after Henry Cabot Lodge changed it. Some Americans also thought it was a little too harsh on the Germans. In the end, the USA never joined the League of Nations.
