    Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia
    July 28, 1914 marked one month that Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife had been killed. In response to the killing of the couple, Austria-Hungary decided they would invade Serbia. Austria broke all diplomatic relations with Serbia on July 25 of that year. This led into complete immobilization in Germany.

    On July 31, 1914, Austria-Hungary attacked Russia. This resulted in full mobilization of Russian troops. ALthough the two countries had decided to stay art pesace for a while, Austria Hungary still ame in in full force against Russia.

  • Battle of Jutland

    Battle of Jutland
    On May 31, 1916, the biggest naval battle of World War 1 occurred. The battle took place off Denmark’s seacoast. It started with gunfire between the German and British scouting forces. The battle in total consisted of around 250 ships and 100,000 total men. 6,000 British sailors lost their lives that day. There was never a decided winner of the battle, however.

    The Battle of the Somme took place from July to November of 1916. This battle turned ou t to be one of the most deadly battles of the entire war. It was fought on Western front versus the Germans and the Allied forces. Out of the 3 million soldiers that fought that day, only 2 million made it out with their lives. The battle had lasted 3 months total.

    December 25, 1917 was John’s very first Christmas spent in the war. They had a bid Christmas supper that day. The supper consisted of turkey. The supper was payed for by the Ladies’ Auxilary. There was an orchestra hired and nothing went wrong that day. Everyone partied from 11am to 9 pm.
  • Voyage to St. Nazaire

    Voyage to St. Nazaire
    On May 17, 1918, John and the rest of the people in his group go on a voyage away from Camp Stewart to their new location. They anchored at Hampton Roads at 6 pm that evening. The whole way there they were guarded by hydro planes. The name of their ship they took was called the Pocahontas. After a week they almost arrived at their location but were stopped by some submarines and fought a battle that lasted one hour.

    On August 6, 1918 John experienced his first birthday while deployed. While he had no choice of how to spend it, he tried to make the best of it. However, he got an infection on his chin and ended up having to call it an early night. His face had started to swell so much that he was in pain.

    On August 23, he was sent on a special mission to a British dump at 7 pm. They went through to the trenches. As John and his mates were standing talking a shell burst right over them which resulted in them all falling to the ground and startling the horses. They recovered and finally got back to where they were camped out around 4 am.

    On November 11, 1918, the war was over. An armistice was agreed upon a 5 am that morning Guns were supposed to stop firing at 11 am. This day in history is better known as Veteran’s day in the US now. This truce was signed by the allies of WW1 and Germany in France.
  • Discharge Day

    Discharge Day
    On April 5, 1919, John took his uniform off for the very last time in the war. He and his crew had a dance party that day. He wrote that he was going to join the Y.M.C.A because they make lots of money there. He wrote that he was glad to enlist and proud he could fight for his country.
