    Beginning of World War 1
    On June 28th Franz Ferdinand was shot and killed on the streets of Sarajevo by 19 year old Gavrilo Princip. Franz Ferdinand was the heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. On the 29th of June a message was sent to Serbia accusing them of the assassination. On the 28th of July Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, beginning World War 1.
  • Britain declares war

    Britain declares war
    On the 4th of August 1914 Britain sent out a warning to Austria-Hungary to stand down from the war. However Austria-Hungary ignored these warnings and at 11.00pm on this day a state of war is declared involving Britain.
  • Battle of Gallipoli

    Battle of Gallipoli
    The Battle of Gallilopi was a battle which lasted until 1916. This battle occured when the allies attempted to take over the sea route from Europe to Russia. The battle began when the British and French attacked the Dardanelles Straits, however this attack was unsuccessful.The troops from Britain, France, Australia and New Zealand continued to attack the Gallipoli Peninsula. By October these troops had made little ground in the invasion and had fallen victim to a great deal of casualties.

    Second Battle of Ypres
    The second battle of the four battles in Ypres occured on the 22nd of April 1915. At this battle Germany introduced a new weapon, poison gas. This deadly gas travelled towards the french troops allowing an opening for the German troops to advance onto the French troops land. In the following weeks the troops from France, Belgium and Britain fought to regain the land lost during this battle.

    Limitation of Submarines
    In an attempt to keep the US out of World War 1 the German Emporer, Kaiser Wilhelm, banned unrestricted submarine warfare. Germany feared that if the US entered the war they would have no chance of winning the war due to the resources the US would bring to defeat Germany. However this plan caused problems for the Germans as the US ships carried supplies which aided Britain and France in the war.
  • The Battle of Sommes

    The Battle of Sommes
    The battle of Sommes lasted from the 1st of July to the 18th of November. An attack was launched on the Western Front by the allies. 750,000 soldiers were launched in this battle and by the end of the first day there had been nearly 60,000 casualties. This was the worst day of battle in British history. By the end of the battle there were approxiamtely 620,000 Allied force casulaties, and 500,000 German casualties. However this battle is thought of as a success by the Allied forces.
  • Zimmerman Telegram

    Zimmerman Telegram
    In 1917 the British Intelligence intercepted a telelgram from Germany to Mexico. Germany promised to help Mexico reclaim their land from the US in return for Mexican loyalty and support. Mexico refused the offer of assistance. On the 25th of February the British Intelligence passed on this telegram to President Wilson which pushed the US to enter the war.

    Click Here for videoThe US declared neutrality in 1914. However the US eventually entered the war in1917 as a result of the Zimmerman Telegram to Mexico. Germany also went back on an agreement with the US which stated that they would not attack US passenger ships in return for US neutrality. In 1917 Germany attacked and sank numerous US ships. As a result of Germany's attemts to undermine the US, on the 6th of April 1917 the US declared that they would be entering the war as allies

    Germany and Russia Peace Treaty
    On the 3rd of March 1918 a peace treaty, the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, was signed between Germany and Russia. This treaty meant that Germany could take areas of land formerly owned by Russia such as the Ukraine and Poland. This caused huge problems for France, Britain and the US. By achieving peace on the Eastern front Germany was able to move soldiers over to the Western front to fight the allies.

    On the 4th of October 1918 a telegraph was sent by the German Chancellor Max Von Baden to the US requesting a ceasefire between the German and the Allied forces.
  • Wilhelm Abdicates

    Wilhelm Abdicates
    On the 9th of November 1918 Chancellor Prince Max von Baden announced Wilhelm's decision to resign. Wilhelm, as the emporer of Germany, had been a driving force in the war and became despised by the people of Germany. Before the war Germany had powerful, however by the end of the war Germany was in ruins. When it became clear that Germany could not win the war the decision was made that Wilhelm would resign as the German Emporer. He fled to the Netherlands where he remained til his death.

    Click here for VideoAt 5.00 am on the 11th November the allies and central powers signed an agreeement to end the war. This day is known as Armistice Day. The last soldier was killed at 10.57 am, however the Armistice did not come into effect until 11.00 am.
