  • Archduke Assassination

    Archduke Assassination
    Archduke Franz Ferdinand was killed by Gavrilo Princip on June 28, 1914. This became the only immediate cause of the first world war. Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated by Serbian nationalist, Gavrilo Princip when visiting Serbia. Soon after, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Then system of allies then caused Russia and Germany joined in on the war, taking opposing sides. Germany soon invaded Belgium causing Britain to join in.
  • Sinking of the Lusitania

    Sinking of the Lusitania
    With Germany’s unlimited submarine warfare, it sunk every foreign ship in sight. The time between the sighting of the Lusitania and it’s sinking was only 18 minutes. There were 1,128 people on board, including 128 Americans. This greatly angered America and became one of the driving forces for America’s eventual involvement in the war.

    The US was part of the war before they officially joined because they supplied raw materials, supplies, and money to other countries. The US officially joined ww1 on April 6, 1917 when they declared war on Germany. They US had to declare war on Germany because germany's unrestricted submarine warfare had already sunk several American merchant ships. America could not let them sink anymore of their ships.

    On January 19th, 1918, Woodrow Wilson proposed a 14 part peace plan, including 3 parts. This included the League of Nations, to prevent countries from going to war.

    The End of World War I
    Germany was nearing its collapse once the U.S. joined the allied forces and eventually became too exhausted to continue. Shortly before Germany surrendered Austria-Hungary had given up to the Allied forces which caused a mutiny to arise through the German sailors. The mutiny of sailors forced the kaiser of Germany to give up his control. Therefore, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year 1918 Germany surrendered and ceased fire on the Allies.
