    13.1 - West Africans start to use iron - West Africa

    Around 500 BC West Africans found that by smelting certain rocks, you get a metal. The metal was iron. Because it was stronger than other metal, it was used to make into tools and weapons.

    14.2 - paper is invented - China

    Paper was invented during the Han dynasty. Paper was a cheaper way of keeping records. This eventually sparked the invention of printing and paper currencies.

    15.1 - the Yamato clan takes over Honshu - Japan

    The Yamato clan claims that they are descended from the sun goddess kami. Because of their military might, they defeat the other clans and take over most of Japan.

    This timespan starts from the Yamato rulers and extends all the way to the endo the Samurai period.

    12.1 - Mecca - Muhammad is born

    Muhammad was born into a wealthy family in Mecca at around the year 570 AD. Muhammad was concerned with the eay that rich people were treating the poor. He went to pray and meditte, and one day, when he was vout 40 years old, where he met an angel, who is believed that God had talked through, making Muhammad into a prophet. He later spreads this religion, called Islam to Mecca.

    This timespan includes everything from Muhammad’s time until the day end of the Ottoman empire

    14.1 - Yang Jian ends the period of disunion - northern China

    Yang Jian, the ruler of northern China conquered southern China in 58o and begin the Sui dynasty. He ends the period of disunion that had lasted for 300 years.

    This timespan includes the Sui (589 - 618),the Tang (618 - 907), the Song (960 - 1279), the Ming (1368 - 1644), and the Yuan dynasty (1279 - 1368).

    12.2 - the Islamic Empire - Abu Bakr is chosen as the caliph

    After Muhammad died, the followers of him elected Abu Bakr as Caliph. He was one of the first converts and directed wars for w year that helped spread and unite the Muslim Empire.

    12.3 - Spain - the Berber and the Arabs take over Spain

    The Arabs attacked the Berbers, a nativegroup of North Africans. The Berbers resisted at first, but they were overcomed. Eventually they converted. The Arabs and the Berebers joined force and led an attack on Spain and won. Then the muslims led the army up towards France, but was stopped by a Christian army.

    12.4 - the Muslim Empire - the Arabs created the modern math system

    A muslim scholars use the Indian math system and combined it with Greek math. The result is the numbers we use today, including zero. The same scholar also wrote another book that explained the foundation of basic algebra

    16.1 - The Mayan civilization collapsed - Mayan cities

    The maya civilization suddenly collapsed around 900 AD as civilians started deserting the city and headed back to the countryside. The reason is still unknown.

    14.3 - Neo-Confucianism develops under the Song dynasty - China

    In the late Tang dynasty, scholars became interested once again in Confucianism. This interest sparked Neo-confucianism, which was based on onfucianism but incluede more ideas including philosophy and goveernment matters.

    15.2 - Lady Murasaki Shikibu writes the Tale of Genji - Japan

    In the 1000s Lady Murisaki writes the tale of genji, which historians considered the first full-length novel. It is a novel about genji, a prince who goes on a search for love. Many historians consider it on of the best japanese novels.

    Chapter 13 - Early Afircan Civilizations

    This timespan includes the empires of Ghana (300 - 1200), Mali (1235 - 1500), and Songhai (1400 - 1590)

    13.2 - Ghana collapses - Ghana

    Ghana collapses due to several reasons. The Almoravids invaded, cutting creating new trade routes that bypass Ghana. Although they did not rule for long, without trade, Ghana could not support itself. The Almoravid also bought huge herds that overgraze, destroying much of Ghana's fertile soil. Then the conquered people rebelled.

    15.3 - the Mongols get wrecked a second time - Japan

    The mongols attempt to invade a 2nd time after their first defeat in 1274. Again, a storm comes and sinks many of the Mongol’s ship, forcing them to flee.

    13.3 - Mansa Musa goes on a pilgrimage - Alexandria, Egypt

    In 1324, Mansa Musa, the greatest of the Mali rulers went on a pilgrimage. He passed through many cities, going with a caravan of slaves and spent and gave generously wherever he went. Through his hajj, Mali and the rest of West Africa gained fame as a rich region and Islam spread.

    14.4 - Zhu Yuanzhang defeates the Mongols - China

    The Mongol army invaded Japan and lost. Wih its weakened military, the Chinese rebelled. A former monk named Zhu Yuangzang took charge of the rebel army and led it. after Zhu Yuangzang defeated the Mongol army, he became the emperor and found the Ming dynasty

    16.2 - the Aztec surrendered to the Conquistadors - mesoamerica

    Thinking that Cortés, the leader of the conquistadors was the god Quetzalcoatl, Moctezuama, offered him many gifts. However, Cortés wanted more, so he captured Moctezuma. This angered the Aztec and they bascially started fighting. Moctezuma, the emperor of the Aztec died in the battle. Cortés came back later with angry neighbors and more supplies nad conquered the Aztecs. They had better weapons nad horses, which the Aztecs had never seen and were scared of as well as soread deadly disease.

    16.3 - the Inca Empire falls - South America

    The Incan empire engaged in a civil war where two brothers whom father had died. Atahualpa, one of the brother was victorious. On his way to be crowned, he met Pizarro who attacked and kidnapped Atahualpa. A large ransom of gold and silver was paid, but in the end, Atahualpa was still killed. Some of the Incas got mad and attacked Pizarro, but were defeated. In the end, Pizarro conquered the Incan empire with his 180 men.
  • 13.4 - African art inspires European artists - Europe

    West African sculptures has been admired and part of museums. They were used for religious rituals and were supposedly never to be seen. African artists were respected and in the 1900s, the sculpture even inspired European artist such as Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso.

    Islam is still arount today. Now it is on of the major religions and even here in Malaysia, there are Mosques everywgere
  • Chapter 13 - Modern Event - the blues

    Around 1600 - 1800s West Africsans were brought over to the Americas as slaves. They continued to sing in America as they had sung in Africa. Over time the music develop into the bluesand influenze jazz.
  • Chapter 14 - Modern Event - paper money

    Paper money was used by the song, replacing the heavy Chinese coins. It help the Chinese manage their wealth.
  • Chapter 15 - Modern Event - bushido code

    Many japanese still hold a connection to bushido. The codes still apply to many people today.
  • Chapter 16 - Modern Event - Quechua

    Quenchua is used even today by many countries in South America who had to use if for business in the Incan empire.
