At first William follows his father's footsteps and studies natural sciences for a short period of time before transferring to English literature. As Godling grows up and discovers his true beliefs, he finds that he not the rationalist he father is.

A lot occured in this very important year of Golding's life. This is the year he became an English and Philosophy teacher at Salisbury at Bishop Wordsworth's School. He also married to Anne Brooksfield who he later had two children with.

Off to serve your Country

From 1940 to 1945 after just starting his new career and marrying Anne, Golding heads off to serve in the Navy in the midts of WWII. During he time at war he sees the evils of humankind which may very well have been a catalyst for his idea for his future novel.
