West of Kabul, East of New York: Tamim Ansary

  • Early life

    Early life
Ansary, an Afghan-American, lives a double life of conflicting nationalities and cultures. His Afghan background is saturated with Islamic tradition, while his American background is engrossed in secular practices. As expected this presented him with identity struggles, especially because of living in a nation that demonized Afghan life.
  • The Beginning

    The Beginning
These struggles were exasperated after militant Islamic terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center during September 11, 2001. This event inspired Ansary to write and send a compelling email message to twenty of his friends. The email message expressed his opinion of the United States' contempt toward Afghanistan regarding the Twin Towers attack. His message was shared beyond his group of friends, reaching millions of people.
  • Life changing

    Life changing
His whole life had changed because he couldn't get a job nor walk out of his home anymore. And in America, Afghanistan people were being harassed and threatened for what their country had done.
  • Not stopping

    Not stopping
Tamim was confident and didn't care anymore of how people viewed him or called him because he had now received a job and gained trust in people around him.
  • Idea

    Idea
But then again Tamim wasn't safe anymore and was still harrased but he would look the other way and not feed them energy. So he had taken all of it and had dumped it into ideas of how he could use it for good and that was to write.
  • Listen

    Listen
He had sent it out to a friend and his friend spread it to another friend then eventually it had reach everywhere to a point where people started to realize that he has been going through some things that no one should be going through. But then there were people who criticized him for what he had made America look like an unequally country.
  • Tamim new life

    Tamim new life
After Tamim's paper had been read and heard around the world, his whole life had changed by getting support from different people, getting different job offers and getting love from his family. Ever since his parents had left America and had went back to Afganhistan he hadn't talked to them since his paper had reached Afghanistan.
  • Get up

    Get up
One day when Tamim was going to work he was beaten and robbed from his belongings by a racist mob which had left him in severer health. But that didn't stop him because he had spread the word and had grew stronger as a person in his beliefs.
  • Finally

    Finally
Finally months had went by without a problem nor struggles, and Tamim's life was back to how he had dreamed it would be. Him and his family living in a free country without no worries and do what they wish without being criticized and live as a happy citizen in America.
  • A Voice Heard Around The World

A Voice Heard Around The World
Although the message was written in a short period of time, it captured the depth of his complex life with admirable sophistication. He became a hero who helped unite people of clashing cultures with his truthful words. He wanted the world to understand reconciliation is possible, even after a devastating tragedy.
